Dana White reflects on how ‘the worst experience’ he’s ever had shaped his plans for Canelo Alvarez vs Terence Crawford

Dana White hopes to make some big changes to boxing that he believes are long overdue.

There was some pushback to White’s plans after he unveiled exactly what his goals are with his new venture into boxing.

The UFC president has been a fan of the sport for a long time but he’s also been openly critical of several aspects of it.

He’s never been opposed to taking on new challenges, as the UFC’s event at the White House is proving, but changing boxing from the inside is one of his biggest tasks.

Fans will get to see their first glimpse of this on September 13 at Allegiant Stadium when he promotes the huge clash between Canelo Alvarez and Terence Crawford.

Dana White recalls how the ‘horrendous’ last boxing event he went to inspired what he wants to change

In a recent interview with Max Kellerman on Inside The Ring, Dana White was asked about what aspects of the UFC he wants to implement into boxing ahead of this weekend’s huge event.

The MMA leader certainly isn’t free of criticism but anyone that has tuned in regularly or been to a live event can speak to how the shows run like clockwork.

White spoke about how one of his biggest issues with boxing is how long it takes to get from fight to fight.

“I like when the night moves fast. Like right now, when you watch a boxing event, they’ll have one fight, then there’s a podcast… The night gets dragged out. I mean, it’s bad enough for the people at home watching on TV, the people that are there live, it has to be insane.”

White recalled how this, along with several other issues like a lack of security, was his lasting memory from the last boxing event that he attended.

The UFC president spoke about how the experience of watching the rematch between Tyson Fury and Deontay Wilder in 2020 helped him to realize what needed changing.

“I haven’t been to a fight in years. The last fight that I went to was at MGM and it was Tyson Fury and Wilder. It was the worst experience that I’ve ever had at any event ever… I’ve been to small s—– shows that were way better run than that one was… Everything about the night was just horrendous except the fight.”

Dana White reveals his ambitions for his new boxing venture

When speaking about his plans for entering the boxing world, Dana White has made it very clear where his focus is.

He’s made many references to Dana White’s Contender Series which is used to fill the UFC roster up with new fighters that he’s excited to see compete inside the Octagon.

While White’s clear goal is to create a new way to build stars in the sport, he’s also not expecting this to be a smaller show for hardcore fans.

The UFC president was asked by Max Kellerman whether he sees this move into boxing being an attempt to become the promotion that people associate with the sport, in the same way that the UFC is the major player in MMA or the NBA dominates basketball.

“Yeah, I guess that’s how you put it,” White responded.
