Power Slap has been controversial from the moment that it was founded in 2022.
While the UFC often receives criticism from fans for various reasons, the negatives that have been held against Power Slap have been consistent from the very start.
The slapping promotion certainly produces social media clips that are sure to turn heads but for a lot of combat sports fans, any novelty that this had quickly disappeared.
Of course, there are always going to be people who question whether something is entertaining or not based on personal tastes but the Power Slap conversation goes further than this.
Doctor-turned-fighter Mikhail Varshavski recently spoke about Power Slap, speaking about the health concerns of competing in it, though a former UFC fighter says he can’t see where the criticism is coming from.

Alan Jouban gets slammed by fans for his thoughts on Power Slap criticism
Alan Jouban competed 13 times inside the Octagon before announcing his retirement in May of 2021 so that he could focus on his broadcasting career.
The 42-year-old has been a part of UFC broadcasts for some time and while he’s not usually a figure that attracts much negativity from the fans, a recent post of his certainly did that.
Jouban recently shared his thoughts on some of the concerns that were raised by ‘Dr Mike’ during his recent appearance on The Ariel Helwani Show.
In his response, the former welterweight said that he couldn’t understand why combat sports fans would be so against Power Slap because the competitors choose to take part and it often produces knockouts.
The fans clearly didn’t see Jouban’s side, with many downplaying his response while giving their own thoughts.
‘Surprising coming from you. You should know better. Power Slap is not a sport and it has no skill involved. This is such a bad take.’
‘It’s a trash “sport”, and it’s lame AF. Indefensible stance.’
‘We cheer the KO because it took talent we recognize from the other fighter in MMA or boxing or any other combat sport to produce. Slapping someone just standing there is not talent.
‘Holy hell you can’t be serious.’
‘Some real bulletproof reasoning there dude. Outstanding.’
‘It’s the part you glossed over. Most don’t cheer for the KO when there is no defense. And the initial thrill fades fast when every outcome feels the same.’
‘Oh Alan.’
Joe Rogan shared his thoughts on Power Slap after being sent invites by Dana White
In a previous episode of his podcast, Joe Rogan shared his thoughts on Power Slap, questioning why anyone would want to compete in the ruleset.
As a fan of martial arts, the long-time UFC commentator shared a lot of the same feelings as the fight fans who responded to Alan Jouban’s post, stating that the lack of defense doesn’t make it appealing.
“It’s so crazy to watch,” Rogan said on an episode of the Joe Rogan Experience. “I just don’t understand why people are signing up for that because the thing about fighting is you’re trying to not get hit.”
Rogan also said that Dana White had been trying to convince him to attend one of the events, which he suggested will happen at some stage.
“Dana White keeps trying to get me to come see. I’m like, ‘Okay, I’ll go. I’ll go to one of these.’ But it’s just so nuts.”
