Former UFC fighter who said he’d beat Demetrious Johnson in grappling gets brutally choked out cold

Things did not go well for this former UFC contender and ONE Championship titleholder in his latest outing.

Jarred Brooks is one ex-UFC fighter who was able to find success away from MMA’s leading promotion, as he reeled off four straight wins to reach a title under Asia’s biggest combat sports banner.

The American, who took former two-time UFC champion Deiveson Figueiredo to a split decision during his 2-2 run inside the Octagon, signed with ONE Championship and enjoyed a perfect rise to the strawweight (125 pounds) belt.

But since Brooks beat Joshua Pacio at ONE 164 in December 2022, ‘The Monkey God’ has fallen on hard times. And the latest setback for a man who once held aspirations of beating one of the sport’s GOATs was as brutal as they come…

Ex-UFC contender Jarred Brooks viciously submitted by 14-1 Russian at ONE Fight Night 36

Having lost his title via disqualification following an illegal slam against Pacio in their rematch, Brooks quickly returned to winning ways by defeating Gustavo Balart to claim the interim ONE strawweight strap.

But after failing to repeat his success against Pacio the first time around in their trilogy fight, the American has dropped another two bouts to sit on the longest losing skid of his 28-fight career.

The latest fighter to get the better of Brooks was Mansur Malachiev, a 14-1 Russian who has trained among some of the best wrestlers in the game in Dagestan and once held gold under Khabib Nurmagomedov’s Eagle FC banner.

In their clash at Friday’s ONE Championship event in Bangkok, Thailand, Malachiev utilized a rare north-south choke to brutally leave Brooks unconscious in round two.

Jarred Brooks claimed to have better BJJ than UFC GOAT Demetrious Johnson

The recent result in Bangkok has left Brooks winless in his past three fights, and his ONE form is a far cry from the successful run that left him placing his sights on a UFC GOAT.

Brooks called out Demetrious Johnson after his UFC release in 2018. When they later landed in the same promotion once again and both surged to ONE Championship gold, ‘The Monkey God’ again targeted the flyweight legend.

“I’m stronger than Demetrious, and I’m faster than Demetrious,” Brooks told the South China Morning Post in 2022.

“Meeting Demetrious for the first time was absolutely insane because I thought Demetrious was taller than me. But I’m taller than Demetrious and that’s really weird to me. But he has a really big arm. He can stretch his arms really, really high, so it doesn’t matter on the reach.

“I think my wrestling goes beyond his. I think my jiu-jitsu strength goes beyond his jiu-jitsu capabilities,” Brooks continued. “But yeah, I think that Demetrious and I would go a hard five rounds.”

Brooks called out Johnson for both MMA and submission grappling, believing he could go toe to toe with the legend in both disciplines.
