UFC Vegas 109 star sleeps rival with ferocious one-punch KO after ‘seeing lights’ just seconds into the fight

Welterweight Uros Medic overcame early adversity to flatten Gilbert Urbina at UFC Vegas 109.

The first finish of UFC Vegas 109 came at the hands of a welterweight who nearly got knocked out just seconds into the fight.

Welterweights Uros Medic and Gilbert Urbina kicked things off on the UFC Vegas 109 prelims on Saturday at the Apex. It was an intriguing striker vs. grappler matchup featuring two of the welterweight division’s rising stars.

Initially, it looked like a short night at the office for Medic after Urbina nearly knocked him out cold.

Uros Medic overcomes near-knockout to knock Gilbert Urbina unconscious at UFC Vegas 109

Just eight seconds into the fight, Urbina caught Medic with a right hand to earn a quick knockdown. But Urbina didn’t follow up with ground-and-pound, instead opting to welcome Medic back to his feet.

Urbina’s decision would come back to haunt him just seconds later. At the one-minute mark in the first round, Medic landed a brutal knee in the clinch, followed up by a straight-left to Urbina’s chin that sent the former The Ultimate Fighter standout collapsing to the canvas below.

After getting the win, Medic admitted to Daniel Cormier in his post-fight interview that he was ‘seeing lights’ after Urbina dropped him early on. Luckily, Medic was able to recover quickly from Urbina’s big punch to earn a brutal highlight finish.

Medic bounced back after a KO loss to Punahele Soriano in his most-recent fight at UFC Vegas 101. He’s never fought to a decision, win or lose, in his MMA career through 14 professional fights.

Meanwhile, Urbina’s UFC roster spot is in question after another disappointing performance at UFC Vegas 109. He lost by first-round KO to Charles Radtke in February 2024, his most-recent outing.

UFC Vegas 109 kicked off with ‘horrible’ split decision scorecards

Earlier on the UFC Vegas 109 prelims, the card kicked off with a head-scratching split decision between Cody Brundage and Eric McConico. Despite Brundage outworking McConico statistically in two of the three rounds, McConico walked away with a split decision victory that left fans stunned by the result.

It was McConico’s first UFC win after a brutal debut loss to Nursulton Ruziboev at UFC Seattle earlier this year. Meanwhile, Brundage is now winless in four of his last five fights, including a submission defeat to Bo Nickal at UFC 300.
