Carlos Prates went off on Ian Machado Garry for failing to finish a UFC fighter he smoked inside of a round.
Following a banner UFC year with four-straight knockouts, Carlos Prates returns for his first fight of 2025 in the main event spotlight once again.
The Fighting Nerds star is set to take on #7-ranked welterweight contender Ian Machado Garry in the five-round headliner of UFC Kansas City this Saturday.
Things are quickly heating between Machado Garry and Prates ahead of their fight this weekend as the Irishman called Prates a fake fighter for quitting in a bout that took place more than 8 years ago.
Prates has since fired back, taking shots at Machado Garry’s ‘boring’ fighting style, having more decision wins than KO’s on his UFC resume.
Carlos Prates criticizes Ian Machado Garry for not stopping ‘no leg’ Neil Magny
Prates and Machado Garry share one common opponent, that being perennial welterweight contender Neil Magny.
Magny was referred to as the division’s ‘gatekeeper’ for much of his career as the veteran tested younger contenders, promising prospects and even a few former champs looking to move up the rankings.
In 2023, Machado Garry dismantled Magny in their fight at UFC 292. Through two rounds, Magny’s left leg was absolutely compromised by a multitude of leg kicks from Machado Garry. Magny could barely stand, grimacing with each kick his opponent threw.
Machado Garry had Magny badly hurt with his attacks in round 3, sweeping his leg from underneath him, but was unable to find a finish in the lopsided performance.
“The guy stood two rounds with Neil Magny on the cage and he didn’t knock the guy out,” Prates scoffed at Machado Garry on his YouTube channel.
“Magny with a bruised leg…
“Neil Magny… no leg and he says he’s going to knock me out.
“That’s f*****,” Prates said of Machado Garry’s KO threats.
“No way.”
Carlos Prates folded Neil Magny in a round for 4th KO of 2024
More than a year after Magny survived Machado Garry, the ranked contender would meet Carlos Prates in the main event of UFC Vegas 100 last November.
Yet to see a third round in his incredible UFC run, Prates would need less than round to dispatch of Magny.
In the final 10 seconds of round 1, the Brazilian clubbed Magny with a shot to the head that put him down. A walk-off KO for Prates, the cigarette smoker’s sixth in a row.
For the first time in a long time, Neil Magny was booted from the UFC welterweight rankings with Carlos Prates taking his place.
Currently the #13-ranked contender, Prates isn’t too far off from a title shot with another highlight-reel finish of Ian Machado Garry this Saturday.
