Dustin Poirier updates on UFC retirement fight as ‘fake news’ spreads about potential opponent

Dustin Poirier’s final chapter of his illustrious UFC career is close to coming to fruition after he updated his following on social media.

UFC superstar Dustin Poirier wants at least one more fight before hanging up the gloves and bringing his legendary career to a storybook end. After appearing set on retirement following a loss to Islam Makhachev at UFC 302, Poirier quickly pivoted on that stance and isn’t ready to stop fighting just yet.

Poirier has plenty of opponent options for his last UFC appearance, including a potential trilogy fight with Justin Gaethje. A third fight with BMF titleholder Max Holloway is another possibility after Holloway committed to a full-time move to lightweight after falling to Ilia Topuria.

Poirier went from a UFC journeyman to a pay-per-view standout in just a few years inside the Octagon. His two wins over Conor McGregor in 2021 cemented him as one of the top draws in mixed martial arts today.

Since Poirier teased at least one more fight in the Octagon, many opponents have been proposed, including a possible clash with Rafael Fiziev. It was reported earlier this week that the UFC was eying Poirier vs. Fiziev for UFC 313 in March.

Dustin Poirier shuts down Rafael Fiziev fight rumors

Amidst speculation about his next fight, Poirier took to social media to update fans on when he’ll return to the Octagon.

“Thought I had one but still working on the finale,” Poirier responded.

After another fan inquired about a rumored Poirier vs. Fiziev booking, Poirier quickly squashed that narrative.

“Fake news,” Poirier said.

As of this writing, Fiziev nor Poirier have fights in the works. Fiziev hasn’t fought since suffering a serious knee injury against Mateusz Gamrot last year.

Assuming Poirier’s comments about Fiziev hold, he’s eying another top name for his UFC comeback. In recent months, Poirier has expressed a desire to fight in his home state, Louisiana, for his UFC finale, although the UFC hasn’t booked an event there since 2015.

Dustin Poirier’s retirement fight eyed for 2025

Dan Hooker is another name to watch in the Poirier fight sweepstakes. Poirier and Hooker fought in one of the wildest bouts of the 2020 slate with Poirier earning a split decision victory.

Hooker surged into the lightweight Top 5 by defeating Gamrot in an upset win at UFC 305. A rematch between Hooker and Poirier could be intriguing for both sides.

While Poirier hasn’t hoisted a lineal UFC title during his career, he’s a safe bet to enter the UFC Hall of Fame one day. He’s earned wins against the likes of Michael Chandler, Anthony Pettis, and Gaethje in recent years.

Poirier’s most recent victory came against Benoit Saint-Denis at UFC 299 in March. He bounced back in a big way after falling to Gaethje by head-kick knockout at UFC 291.

The first quarter of 2025 seems like the targeted timeframe for Poirier’s next fight. In the meantime, speculation regarding who he’ll face will persist, although one name can be safely removed from the mix.
