Landing a significant career landmark before his rivalry with Chris Eubank Jr., Conor Benn would turn in a devastating victory over a star who fought the who’s who of the division before his retirement.
Six fights deep into his lengthy run as the Continental WBA welterweight champion, emerging British talent Conor Benn had turned in a spectacular unbeaten streak spanning 23 fights before his decision loss to Chris Eubank Jr. earlier this year.
And during that run, in which Benn came quite close to a staggering knockout loss, the Greenwich puncher recorded some notable wins.
Likely none bigger, however, than his shocking faceplant knockout of a former world champion who shared the ring with Manny Pacquiao.
Conor Benn’s vicious knockout win over Chris Algieri
Sharing the ring with former WBO junior welterweight champion Chris Algieri in his biggest test thus far in his career, Benn welcomed the New York puncher to the UK for his ultimate retirement fight in Liverpool.
And improving to 20-0 in a landmark career win for the 29-year-old Londoner, Benn unloaded with a hellacious fourth-round win.
Pinned Algieri — who had fought the likes of Pacquiao, as well as former welterweight kingpin Errol Spence Jr. — to the ropes in the round, Benn exploded with a huge left-right combination, faceplanting Algeiri for a brutal finish.
After the devastating knockout loss to Benn, despite weighing up a potential return to the ring in a bid to capture one final world championship, former kickboxing star Algeiri confirmed his retirement due to persistent injuries.
Conor Benn lined up for title fight with Chris Eubank Jr. win
Tasked with avenging his sole professional loss in his rematch with Eubank Jr. next month, Benn has quite the notable fight on the horizon if he wins, it seems.
This week, reports detailed how Benn would be offered a title fight with German contender Abass Baraou, who won the interim WBA light middleweight crown back in August.
A showdown with Baraou would present Benn with his first chance to compete for world championship spoils in his young career, having previously held Continental gold at the welterweight limit before his 2022 suspension.
