Wanderlei Silva is reportedly conscious and only went to hospital out of caution after he was brutally knocked out in a bizarre post-fight brawl last night.
UFC Hall of Famer Silva was left unconscious in the middle of the ring as chaos broke out around him at last night’s Spaten Fight Night. He had just been disqualified from an exhibition bout with former boxing champion Acelino ‘Popo’ Freitas when carnage ensued.
Silva was punched by a member of the Freitas corner wearing a tuxedo, and was unconscious for a decent length of time before being attended to by officials. He then went to a Sao Paulo hospital where he is recovering well.

Wanderlei Silva’s manager gives positive update from hospital after KO in brawl
Wanderlei Silva was quickly rushed to hospital after being knocked out in a post-fight brawl at Spaten Fight Night on Saturday. According to a report from Combate, the UFC legend was taken to São Luiz Hospital in the South of São Paulo.
His management have also claimed that the measure was just ‘a precaution’ after they were able to walk him out of the ring and get him on to a stretcher and into an ambulance. The same Combate report, translated by Bloody Elbow, quotes an unnamed manager as saying Silva is already conscious.
Reporter Wesley Felix caught video from ringside that showed Silva being walked out of the ring covered by a towel doused in blood. He reports that “it took at least three cloths to clean the canvas” following the incident.
Felix also reports that tensions did not cool much once Silva was taken care of, and that there were further arguments backstage.
Wanderlei Silva was disqualified from Spaten Fight Night exhibition in bizarre circumstances
Former PRIDE champion Silva returned against former two-time world boxing champion Acelino Freitas (41-2) in an exhibition at Spaten Fight Night 2. The silliness began at their pre-fight weigh-in, when ‘The Axe Murderer’ outweighed his opponent by 44lbs, but it didn’t help him much in the ring.
‘Popo’ is a far more accomplished boxer than Silva and was able to frustrate him throughout the contest into throwing illegal shots including kicks and headbutts. And eventually the former MMA star was disqualified, leading to a mass brawl in the ring.
Silva was deducted two points for throwing repeated headbutts before ultimately being disqualified. The referee had seen enough and waved things off at 1:34 of round four.
