Terence Crawford stripped: Unknown 17-1 boxer takes world title 8 days after Canelo Alvarez win

Terence Crawford has been stripped of one of his titles just nine days after beating Canelo Alvarez

‘Bud’ shocked the world by picking up a unanimous decision win over Canelo Alvarez on September 13.

In doing so, Terence Crawford became the undisputed (WBA (Super), WBC, IBF, WBO, and The Ring) super middleweight champion.

The 37-year-old entered the biggest fight of his life as the WBA light middleweight titleholder after outpointing Israil Madrimov in August 2024.

Terence Crawford stripped of world title

On Sunday, it was announced that Terence Crawford had lost his 154lb world title.

Boxing’s biggest star confirmed he doesn’t intend to return to the division to defend his belt.

As a result, the WBA stripped Crawford and promoted their Interim titleholder, Abass Baraou.

The news was confirmed by Baraou’s promoter, Wasserman Boxing, in a social media statement. It read: “Abass Baraou is full world champion. Seat at the top table confirmed for AB, who would you like to see him fight next?”

The 17-1 German boxer earned his interim title with a win over Yoenis Tellez in August. Baraou scored a knockdown with 10 seconds left on the clock to cement his unanimous decision (116-111, 115-112, 117-110) victory.

Terence Crawford to consider retirement

There is no obvious next fight for Terence Crawford, besides an unwanted rematch with Canelo Alvarez.

Shakur Stevenson is one of the many people advising the 42-0 star to retire on top after his latest win.

Crawford said that is something he would consider doing during a post-fight interview with Max Kellerman.

The boxing analyst asked a question about retirement immediately after the biggest fight of 2025.

“I don’t know,” Crawford replied.

“I gotta sit down with my team and we’ll talk about it.”

Since then, the only Crawford retirement update has come from his trainer, Brian McIntyre.

‘Bomac’ is confident we’ll see his star pupil fight again, but the man himself has remained silent on the subject.
