Canelo Alvarez receives unlikely support from Terence Crawford ally as future called into question

Canelo Alvarez has received some rather surprising support from the most unlikely of sources, off the back of his crushing defeat to Terence Crawford.

Dropping his first-ever loss at the super middleweight limit, Canelo Alvarez left Las Vegas without his undisputed crown after a rather lopsided loss to Terence Crawford.

And set to return to the drawing board ahead of a return, Canelo has been linked with a whole host of matchups as part of an expected retirement tour as soon as next year.

However, with fans and pundits calling into question the Mexican’s immediate future in the ring, Canelo has been defended from critics by a firm ally of the above-mentioned Crawford.

Terence Crawford’s coach goes to bat for Canelo Alvarez

Coaching his long-time student Crawford to a dominant win over Canelo, head coach Brian ‘BoMac’ McIntyre had predicted a rather emphatic win for the Nebraska native ahead of the clash.

And backing the challenger to beat Canelo from pillar to post, McIntyre’s assessment of the matchup was not entirely wide of the mark.

But with some pundits and fans weighing in on the future of Jalisco star Canelo in the ring off the back of his third career loss, McIntyre has supported the now-former titleholder.

“Rest up, [get] back in the gym, assess where you’re at,” McIntyre said of Canelo during an interview with The Ring. “The man has nothing to prove.

“Just get what you can out of the sport,” McIntyre explained. “Your legacy is already cemented.”

And joining a select list of stars to topple the veteran Canelo, Crawford has been urged to think carefully about his next outing in the ring by a star the former already defeated.

Terence Crawford encouraged to take another super fight

With his win earlier this month, Crawford joined both the veteran Floyd Mayweather and light heavyweight megastar Dmitry Bivol in solving the puzzle that is Canelo.

And according to another former light heavyweight kingpin, namely Sergey Kovalev, he’s keen to see Crawford set foot in the ring against the Russian in a bid to further add to the history books.

If Crawford is to make a staggering light heavyweight move and topple Bivol, he would fast track himself to another potential showdown in a bid to become the first-ever four-weight undisputed champion in boxing history.
