Gennady Golovkin offered boxing comeback by British star who he almost fought before hiatus

Amid rumors of a potential return to the ring, former world champion Gennady Golovkin has been offered a potential comeback against a rather familiar star.

Sending the boxing world into raptures this month, former middleweight world champion Gennady Golovkin played up a potential return to boxing, claiming he once more has “emotions” for the sport he once ruled with an iron fist.

And linked with a whole host of matchups already in a prospective comeback, the 43-year-old has been backed to return to the top of the middleweight limit, which he once conquered.

Furthermore, the Kazakh icon has now been offered a route to the ring once again by a British talent whom he was at loggerheads years ago.

Gennady Golovkin offered Chris Eubank Jr. clash after failed 2016 bout

Locked in negotiations to take on Chris Eubank Jr. back in 2016, a pairing between the Hove puncher and Golovkin failed to ever materialise despite efforts.

Ultimately, Golovkin would take on Eubank Jr.’s compatriot Kell Brook, stopping the Sheffield challenger with a fifth-round TKO finish in London, having inflicted a brutal eye injury on the former in the process.

And amid news of a potential comeback to the ring for the first time since his trilogy fight loss to Canelo Alvarez back in 2022, Golovkin has been welcomed to the squared circle by Eubank Jr., who rematches Conor Benn in November.

“Why not?” Eubank Jr. told Sky Sports of a potential fight with Golovkin. “He’s a legend of the sport.

“If the fans wanted to see a fight like that, I don’t know if they do, but if they did, absolutely,” Eubank Jr. continued.

Chris Eubank Jr. holds grudge on Gennady Golovkin pairing

Missing out on a clash with Golovkin as part of a 2016 blockbuster, Eubank Jr. revealed previously that a pairing with the Olympic star was atop his list for most desired fights.

Drafting out in place of challenger Brook, Eubank Jr. voiced his displeasure at having missed the chance to fight Golovkin, before claiming he could even defeat the record-setting middleweight kingpin.

“People put this guy’s [Golovkin] name so high,” Eubank Jr. told Sky Sports in 2020. “But I know I can beat him. I know that I have the tools and the style to take this guy out.

“My speed, my tenacity? I don’t think he would be able to deal with it.”
