A former UFC fighter has given Conor McGregor a reality check about his failed political plan.
Between ongoing teases about an Octagon comeback and his promotion of the Bare Knuckle Fighting Championship, McGregor has been vocal about Ireland’s political scene for much of this year.
The former two-division UFC champion even announced his intention to run for the country’s presidency. While many branded that an impossibility given what was required to get his name on the ballot, that did not stop McGregor from reiterating that goal.
That was until this month, when McGregor ‘pulled out’ of the presidential race. But UFC legend Chael Sonnen has reminded ‘The Notorious’ that he was never actually in it…

Chael Sonnen rejects Conor McGregor’s claim about his failed political plan
McGregor announced his withdrawal in a lengthy social media statement, claiming to have reached the decision after “consulting” with his family.
That was among the points that drew a laugh out of Sonnen while the former UFC title challenger reacted to the announcement in a video uploaded to his YouTube channel.
Another was the justification for McGregor pulling out, with ‘The Bad Guy’ noting that the Dubliner was never even part of the race from which he claimed to be exiting.
“When you’re blowing c—e, getting blown by s—ers, running in and out of court dates for this very thing, oh, by the way, tying a dumbbell to your hoo-ha, it’s a little hard to act like you’re the guy that consults with family,” Sonnen said.
“You’re very clearly the guy that does whatever he feels like. So, you know, this whole ‘talk to my family routine’…incredibly absurd.
“The most absurd thing was thinking that he owed an explanation,” Sonnen continued. “An explanation to who? The parliament never recognized you! There was no vote. There was no ballot.
“‘Conor McGregor has withdrawn his pending plans to be the president of Ireland.’ Well, there’s one problem with that, Conor — you were never running for president of Ireland! … This wasn’t real. It wasn’t real.”

Conor McGregor confirms his comeback opponent for UFC’s White House event
With his political ambitions on hold for the time being, McGregor seemingly plans on putting his focus back on a comeback inside the cage.
Michael Chandler remains hopeful of fighting McGregor, years after their so-far failed matchup was announced, and his goal recently received a boost when the Irishman name-dropped him as the opponent for his planned UFC White House return in 2026.
“I’m on it,” McGregor claimed during a recent appearance on Fox & Friends. “I am, this is me. Michael Chandler.
“Michael Chandler and myself have done the show, The Ultimate Fighter, we’ve had a good back and forth. He’s a good, tough guy.”
