UFC star lived up to ‘Savage’ nickname by leaving her rival foaming at the mouth with frightening choke

One of the most brutal UFC submissions of all time took place on this day three years ago.

UFC Vegas 60 went down at the Apex on September 17, 2022, headlined by Cory Sandhagen’s victory over Song Yadong. That memorable fight ended when a cut sustained by the Chinese bantamweight was deemed too severe for him to continue.

While that was somewhat of an anticlimactic ending to a great main event, the undercard was not short on some better finishes. That included Gregory Rodrigues fighting through another gruesome cut to stop Chidi Njokuani with strikes and Joe Pyfer’s successful UFC debut.

When it came to submissions, UFC Vegas 60 had two, the first of which was among the scariest ever seen inside the Octagon…

Gillian Robertson put Mariya Agapova out cold with terrifying rear-naked choke at UFC Vegas 60

Not many have put their submission prowess on display in the UFC as much as top-10 strawweight contender Gillian Robertson. And across her record tally, one scary finish stands out from the rest.

Before dropping to 115 pounds, ‘The Savage’ shared the cage with Mariya Agapova in a flyweight contest at UFC Vegas 60. The Canadian lived up to her nickname on that night three years ago, rallying after a difficult first round to submit her Kazakhstani opponent in round two.

After establishing a dominant position on the ground, Robertson defeated Agapova with a rear-naked choke. The move was frightening, as the Canadian’s tight hold put ‘Money Mashka’ out cold and left her shaking and foaming at the mouth.

Referee Mark Smith received flak for the stoppage after the scary scene inside the Octagon, which left many fans initially fearing the worst for the defeated Agapova.

No woman has more UFC submissions than Gillian Robertson

Robertson is the Charles Oliveira of women’s MMA, and she even wants to surpass the legendary Brazilian.

The Canadian’s win over Agapova marked her sixth UFC submission, and she quickly followed that up with a seventh at the expense of Piera Rodríguez in 2023.

No woman has recorded more submissions in the Octagon than ‘The Savage’, and the 30-year-old has her sights set on the overall UFC record held by the former lightweight king.

“I just keep on looking at Charles Oliveira’s submission record,” Robertson said after submitting Agapova. “He’s at 16 right now.

“I’m like, ‘I just need to catch up to that s—.'”
