Joe Rogan leaves Matthew McConaughey confused after explaining ‘weird’ UFC rule he wants to change

Joe Rogan went off on a tangent during a recent podcast with Matthew McConaughey.

The Academy Award-winning actor wanted to promote his new book ‘Poems & Prayers’ and his latest film ‘The Lost Bus’, but he ended up talking about MMA rules with the legendary UFC commentator.

Joe Rogan has been vocal about his concerns for the heavyweight division, which he thinks is shallow.

The popular podcaster left his guest baffled by explaining how the UFC heavyweight division is different from any other.

Matthew McConaughey confused by UFC heavyweight limit

Joe Rogan and Matthew McConaughey were talking about how athletes get better as time moves on.

McConaughey used the increasing weight of NFL players over time to make a point on the subject.

Rogan used that to turn the conversation onto the UFC and point out the heavyweight rule he hates.

“Well, believe it or not, the UFC heavyweight division has a weight class,” he said. “You can’t be over 265lbs. To fight for the UFC heavyweight title, you must weigh 265lbs or below. It’s happened before where guys had to lose weight to fight at heavyweight.

A confused McConaughey replied: “Whoa! Isn’t that number going to have to rise?”

Rogan added: “I would assume it would, but the problem is there’s actually a heavyweight class above that, that’s super heavyweight. But we’ve never had that in the UFC. There’s never been a single super heavyweight fight in the UFC. Everything has always been inside the 265lb weight class, which I think is real weird.

Joe Rogan wants more weight classes

McConaughey looked puzzled as he continued to probe his host for more information on the subject.

The ‘Dallas Buyers Club’ star asked: “Where’s that number come from?”

That sent Rogan off on a rant about the issue of weight classes in MMA, which he often talks about.

“I don’t know. The numbers are real weird anyway because there’s giant gaps in them. It’s like one of the major problems with MMA is that there’s a lack of weight classes,” he continued.

“It’s crazy. The gaps are just too big, right? They’re gigantic. So that’s a major problem with MMA in that there’s less weight classes than there should be. And then you have a cap on heavyweight, which is bananas.”

“Yeah. I never knew that,” McConaughey said.

“I thought heavyweight is like 265 and up. 250 and up. It should be whatever you want to come in with.”
