Adrien Broner was tipped to be the next Floyd Mayweather before fraud check killed his career

Once tipped as the future of boxing — particularly at the welterweight limit, Adrien Broner saw his world come crashing down in one of his most infamous title outings.

Beginning his career in the midst of a stunning 28-fight unbeaten run, former lightweight and welterweight world championship holder Adrien Broner had already turned in a host of notable wins after the turn of the last decade.

And despite achieving gold across four separate weight classes, Broner failed to ever live up to expectations later in his career amid comparisons to Floyd Mayweather.

Many in the boxing world speculate that the outspoken Ohio native’s infamous downfall can be pinpointed to a single fight.

Adrien Broner’s first pro loss to Marcos Maidana

Matching up with a common foe of Mayweather in his second defense of the WBA welterweight title, Broner was matched with Argentine veteran Marcos Maidana back in 2013.

And fresh from a title victory against veteran boxer-turned-analyst Paulie Malignaggi, Broner was put to the sword in emphatic fashion over the course of a 12-round beating by Maidana.

Showboating to a sizable degree in the first round, Broner took Maidana’s back at the ropes during an exchange, and thrusted his hips toward the Argentine brawler.

However, suffering a one-sided unanimous decision loss — the first of his career — Broner was dropped twice with two heavy knockdowns by Maidana, who later thrusted his own hips toward the Cincinnati native to much fanfare.

Off the back of his loss, Broner would suffer further defeats to Shawn Porter, Manny Pacquiao, as well as Mikey Garcia, before suffering a decision loss to Blair Cobbs in his most recent return to the ring last year.

Judged to have brought about the downfall of Broner’s career, Maidana claimed in the years after their clash that he hoped the former world champion could turn his boxing career around before too long.

Adrien Broner thrown off podcast after controversial comments

Coming under fire online as recently as this week, Broner made an appearance on the It Is What It Is podcast with host Cam’ron.

And ditched from the show after constant remarks about Treasure Wilson, Broner was issued his appearance money during the live segment, before the American rapper urged him to leave the studio.

Attempting to engage with both Cam’ron and Wilson through a window at the studio, Broner was described as an “alcoholic” by the former, who also referred to the former world champion as a “junkie”.

“Say that again, I’m sorry. Start that over. Talking about this —– want to talk to me. —– you a alchy, —– I don’t talk to you,” Cam’ron said. “—–, I just needed you for entertainment for the show. F—— junkie. Go ahead, man. My bad.”
