Floyd Mayweather makes big money betting against old rival Canelo Alvarez in Terence Crawford fight

It was an unsuccessful night in the ring for Canelo Alvarez, much to the joy of Floyd Mayweather.

Alvarez locked horns with Terence Crawford at Las Vegas’ Allegiant Stadium on Saturday, with the latter moving up two divisions to challenge for the Mexican star’s undisputed super middleweight championship status.

The pair’s Netflix showdown, which was co-promoted by Dana White and Turki Alalshikh, was among the most highly anticipated bouts in recent memory. It concluded with a shock result, as ‘Bud’ upset Alvarez to take his belts.

While that ending surprised plenty, one prominent name was evidently not shocked by Crawford’s superiority — and he has thousands of dollars to prove as much.

Floyd Mayweather wins $74,000 after Canelo Alvarez’s shock title loss

Crawford marked the latest boxing legend added to the resume of Alvarez. ‘Bud’ became just the third man to defeat the Mexican pound-for-pound great, following in the footsteps of Mayweather and Dmitry Bivol.

While the newly crowned super middleweight king did so toward the back end of his career, Mayweather beat Alvarez in 2013 when he was just starting out his rise to boxing greatness.

The pair have had plenty to say about one another in the years since their clash, with Mayweather taking shots at Alvarez’s historic contract in 2018 and failed drug tests.

With that, ‘Money’ was unsurprisingly watching on Saturday night, and the wealthy ex-pro laid down $50,000 on Crawford to pull off the upset.

That netted Mayweather $74,000 in winnings, returning a total of $124,000 at Alvarez’s expense.

Canelo Alvarez calls Terence Crawford ‘better’ than Floyd Mayweather

Mayweather actually came up post-fight in Las Vegas during both Crawford and Alvarez’s press conferences.

After the victorious ‘Bud’ played down talk that he might have surpassed the 50-0 legend, the Mexican star made a bold claim about how his latest opponent compares with Mayweather.

“I think Crawford is way better than Floyd Mayweather,” Alvarez said.

With the victory, Crawford became the first male boxer in the four-belt era to win the undisputed championship in three weight divisions.
