Terence Crawford hints at change in his style to counter highly controversial aspect of Canelo Alvarez’s career

Terence Crawford needs to overcome some significant hurdles to get his hand raised on Saturday night.

On September 13, ‘Bud’ gets the opportunity to produce a career-defining win in a super fight that his career deserves.

His bout with Canelo Alvarez happening is due to Crawford’s willingness to go after bigger opponents and the toughest challenges.

As many of Alvarez’s former opponents can attest to, this won’t be an easy task even for a fighter who is considered to be one of the best pound-for-pound fighters on the planet.

As if fighting the Mexican star wasn’t difficult enough, there is another obstacle that potentially awaits ‘Bud’ this Saturday which several competitors have had to deal with in the past.

Terence Crawford admits that the judges favoring Canelo Alvarez is something he’s taken into account

People who have been watching boxing for a long time will be able to point to countless results where there was a feeling that the wrong fighter was awarded the decision.

These often fall on the side of the home fighter or the bigger draw, which Canelo Alvarez certainly is on September 13 despite Terence Crawford’s status as another top star.

The Mexican icon has been awarded some controversial wins in the past, with Alvarez’s draw with Gennady Golovkin in their first bout being the most notable.

Compubox had Golovkin outlanding his opponent in ten of the twelve rounds, but that didn’t stop one judge from scoring the fight 118-110 for Alvarez, which produced the split draw outcome.

Crawford admitted that this was discussed during his preparations when he was asked about it in a recent interview on Ring Magazine’s Inside The Ring.

“That ain’t the way I’m thinking but it’s definitely been something that was mentioned and that we talked about, not giving away rounds. Making sure we’re in control of the whole fight and not letting up. We’re definitely aware of things like that but we can’t focus on that. We got to focus on the fight.”

When Max Kellerman spoke about how Crawford was known for being a fighter that would take a few rounds to read his opponent before really showing the levels between him, ‘Bud’ made it clear that this won’t be his strategy on Saturday night.

“We got to win every round possible. From one to twelve if it goes that long.”

Canelo Alvarez also suggested that he’ll be adjusting his style on September 13

Later on in Inside The Ring, Max Kellerman also asked Canelo Alvarez about how his style might be different in this fight.

The Mexican star was better known as a counter puncher for a lot of his career, inviting his opponents to come towards him before he punished them with shots of his own.

Alvarez said that changed once he started to fight bigger opponents that he was faster than, allowing him to be the aggressor instead.

Alvarez then added that this won’t be the case against Terence Crawford due to him moving up to super middleweight, suggesting that we may see him revert to his old style at points in this fight.

“Yeah, I’m gonna need it for sure. You will see.”
