Canelo Alvarez made it look easy when he won his first world title in March 2011.
At just 20 years old, the Mexican superstar had amassed a 35–0–1 record and claimed an interim light middleweight belt.
Canelo Alvarez was given the chance to become a fully fledged WBC champion when he boxed Matthew Hatton.
The younger brother of British boxing legend Ricky Hatton was tough, durable, and showed tons of heart, but he was no match for the man who has since gone on to become one of the greatest of all time.

Canelo’s point deduction & fine
Canelo Alvarez’s bid to become a world champion hit a snag when he tipped the scales at 151.4lbs.
Although his fight with Hatton was for the 154lb belt, both men agreed to a 150lb catchweight.
Thankfully, the fight went ahead after Canelo agreed to pay a 20 percent fine from his $350,000 purse.
$70,000 poorer, the heavy favorite lived up to expectations by winning every round against Hatton.
The only in-fight blip came when he landed an illegal blow at the end of round 7, which cost him a point.
In the end, Canelo won his first world title courtesy of unanimous 119-108 scorecards from the three ringside judges.
What’s next for Canelo Alvarez?
14 years later, Canelo Alvarez has won 16 major world titles across four different weight divisions.
The 35-year-old reigns as the undisputed super middleweight champion ahead of his next bout.
He’ll square off against Terence Crawford in a super fight promoted by Dana White on September 13.
All five of Canelo’s 168lb belts will be on the line when he takes on the 41-0 pound-for-pound superstar.
