Colby Covington slams ‘pathetic’ Dustin Poirier for retiring in latest rant about his ex-teammate

Colby Covington does not intend to let Dustin Poirier retire in peace.

Poirier made his final appearance as a UFC fighter at the July pay-per-view in his home state. Headlining in New Orleans, ‘The Diamond’ completed his trilogy with BMF champion Max Holloway.

Holloway beat Poirier at UFC 318, pulling one back on ‘The Diamond’ after losing their first two contests. The Louisianan fan favorite subsequently made good on his promise to retire, bringing an end to an illustrious career that spanned 16 years.

Along the way, Poirier made a number of rivals. He did not settle all of his feuds inside the cage, something a former teammate was recently keen to remind him of…

Colby Covington berates Dustin Poirier for retiring before fighting him

One of Poirier’s biggest enemies is Colby Covington, a controversial welterweight contender who exited the American Top Team gym on bad terms a number of years ago. That fallout sparked a number of rivalries, one of which was settled inside the cage when Covington defeated Jorge Masvidal at UFC 272, getting the better of his former ATT stablemate.

‘Chaos’ called out Poirier in the aftermath but ‘The Diamond’ repeatedly vowed to never share the cage with the former interim 170-pound titleholder.

During a recent Q&A session on his YouTube channel, Covington showed that the animosity remains as he slammed Poirier for retiring before fighting him.

“He’s been scared of my shadow for years, ever since we trained together at that old gym,” Covington said.

“The guy just knows what I bring to the table. He knows he can’t beat me. He can’t even get a lucky punch on me.

“He’s not even willing to try, (unlike) his friend Jorge,” Covington continued. “At least he tried. Dustin doesn’t even want to try.

“He’s gonna go into retirement knowing that I owned his soul and he didn’t defend his family’s honor or legacy. Dustin’s a little cuck, he’s Louisiana swamp trash, and he’s a pathetic little b—h.”

Dustin Poirier’s first appearance since UFC retirement

Questions over Poirier’s future emerged in the lead-up to and aftermath of his retirement, and it did not take long for ‘The Diamond’ to continue down one post-career avenue.

After a few appearances as an analyst at UFC events, Poirier appeared on ESPN’s desk for UFC 319 in August. He was alongside Chael Sonnen and Brendan Fitzgerald to digest and break down the action in Chicago.

Among other results, the retired fan favorite gave his assessment of Khamzat Chimaev’s title win over Dricus du Plessis in the main event and Lerone Murphy’s spinning back elbow knockout in the co-headliner.

It remains to be seen whether Poirier will become a regular fixture on UFC broadcasts moving forward, but it certainly looks to be one potential venture for him after hanging up the gloves.
