Alexander Volkanovski declares interest in blockbuster clash against Conor McGregor

Alexander Volkanovski is widely considered as the greatest featherweight of all time and he would like to one day share the Octagon with a fellow featherweight great.

Earlier this year at UFC 314, Alexander Volkanovski reclaimed his featherweight title when he dominated Diego Lopes in a vacant title fight following Ilia Topuria’s title vacation.

Since then, the Australian has been sat on the sidelines waiting to see who his next title challenger will be, having previously declared that he wanted to fight Movsar Evloev.

Despite that, following Lerone Murphy’s recent blockbuster win, Volkanovski declared him as his next title fight, with the clash now being targeted for December.

Volkanovski declares interest in future clash against Conor McGregor

The British contender recently made a bold claim regarding Volkanovski’s game, claiming that he has already seen holes in the Australian that he is going to exploit.

However, ‘The Great’ Volkanovski is widely regarded as the greatest featherweight of all time, having scored wins over the likes of Max Holloway and Jose Aldo throughout his UFC tenure.

One featherweight great that Volkanovski hasn’t had the pleasure of sharing the Octagon with is Conor McGregor, and with the Irishman planning his return, Volkanovski has declared interest in a future clash against ‘The Notorious’.

After Donald Trump announced that the UFC will be hosting an event at the White House next July, McGregor immediately declared his interest in competing on the event and even re-entered the drug testing pool.

“Probably Conor, man (I would pick to fight), a lot of people are gonna sit there and be like, ‘Oh yeah Conor is a boring answer’ but he was in the featherweight division, that era when he was just an absolute superstar,” Volkanovski told The Unscripted Show.

“The position you could put yourself in just fighting that guy. When you talk about building your platform, when we talk about money and all of that… The platform you on, you need to take advantage of it and that’s one fast track to getting people to notice you.

“He was a good fighter, he was a great fighter. He was another fighter that his accuracy, he was actually a bit ahead of his time, he was really good, I don’t think people give him credit… He had great timing, great set ups, good understanding of what works and what works for him, and yeah, he was sharp.

“A lot of that is gone now he’s probably gonna be reasonably sharp but he’s never gonna be the same Conor McGregor,” Volk continued.

Who will McGregor fight in his UFC comeback?

At this point, it seems almost certain that the Irishman is gearing up for a return in July 2026, and he has been extremely active on social media posting training footage.

Although he is still regarded as the biggest star in the sport, it is unlikely that he comes back and fights near championship caliber again.

And with that, it makes sense that at this point in both of their careers, McGregor and Michael Chandler finally settle their rivalry on the lawn of the White House.
