Brock Lesnar branded ‘safest’ opponent by UFC legend he was supposed to face in super fight that got away

In 2018, Brock Lesnar teased a potential return to the UFC Octagon.

While Lesnar recorded some devastating wins during his UFC career, he didn’t end up sticking around for too long before going back to the WWE.

It did look, at one stage, like he might be considering another comeback following his brief return at UFC 200 that ended up being a one-off.

UFC 226 saw a new heavyweight champion crowned in the main event, with Lesnar being in attendance at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.

The man that he was lined up to face has claimed that it was a good move for Lesnar to back out of having another fight, with him being incredibly confident that it wouldn’t have ended well for him.

Daniel Cormier is extremely confident that he would have demolished Brock Lesnar if they fought

Following a heated encounter between them inside the Octagon at UFC 226, it looked like Daniel Cormier’s first defense of the heavyweight title could be against a returning Brock Lesnar.

The matchup never happened, with ‘DC’ going on to face Derrick Lewis next time out instead.

Cormier recently spoke about this huge super fight that got away from him during his appearance on Shannon Sharpe’s ‘Club Shay Shay’.

“The WWE got him. The WWE took him back. That was my golden goose, man. We had that moment in the ring, I pushed him, he pushed me. WWE paid him back. They were paying Brock like 6-7 million a year, maybe 10.”

Aside from the fact that the fight would have been huge, one of the reasons why Cormier wanted it so badly was because he was convinced that he would smash the former heavyweight champion.

He broke down during the interview why he was confident of beating Lesnar inside the Octagon.

“It was one of the safest fights I could have had. I’m telling you, it’s just the truth. I like Brock, he’s a great guy, but I watched what Cain [Velasquez] did to him. I watched how he would react to getting punched and I was going to punch him. He would have to take me down to win the fight and I can wrestle.”

Cormier explained how he knew he could beat Lesnar because even if he was taken down, he’d be able to get back up, which would tire out his opponent.

“That’s what happened with Cain. He took Cain down. Cain got up and started kneeing him in his face. I saw Brock recently, he still has that scar under his eye from when Cain kneed him in the face. Still got that big scar under his eye.”

Brock Lesnar also teased a UFC return to fight Jon Jones the year before

In 2017, Jon Jones defeated Daniel Cormier at UFC 214 to win the light heavyweight title before the result was overturned to a no contest due to a positive drug test.

‘Bones’ called out Brock Lesnar in his post-fight interview and he didn’t have to wait too long to get a response.

Shortly after the main event, Lesnar came back at the champion, and though Dana White did downplay the prospect of the fight happening, the WWE star’s comments still got fans excited.

“Be careful what you wish for, young man,” Lesnar told Associated Press.
