UFC legend claims Conor McGregor comeback talks are only to ‘stay relevant’ as he shuts down Irishman’s plan

Conor McGregor is seemingly back in consistent training as he looks to make his return to the UFC in 2026.

Despite having not competed since 2021, Conor McGregor is gearing up towards a return to action in 2026 following Donald Trump’s announcement of a UFC event at the White House.

‘The Notorious’ made a huge step towards his comeback when he recently re-entered the testing pool, registering his first test session in a while.

And with that, UFC boss Dana White recently admitted that he trusts McGregor making his comeback more than he trusts Jon Jones to make his comeback, as he has also been stating his interest in competing on White House event.

UFC legend slams McGregor’s comeback plans

Not only has the former double champion re-entered the testing pool, he has seemingly returned to training, as he has been posting footage online over the last few weeks.

Despite the Irishman seeming like he is in the right mindset to make his return, his comeback has been disputed by UFC legend and current commentator Daniel Cormier, who believes he is just attempting to stay relevant.

“Conor says he wants to fight all the time, and everybody jumps to it, but it’s like, he wants to stay relevant, he wants to stay in the news, he wants the notoriety of being Conor McGregor without having to be Conor McGregor,” Cormier said on the Club Shay Shay podcast.

“That kind of sucks because when he was the man, I bet you tapped in, I bet you tapped into the UFC more than ever because he could sell a fight,” Cormier continued.

Although McGregor was the best fighter in UFC history at selling PPV’s, that won’t matter if he makes his comeback in 2026 as the promotion’s new $7.7 billion broadcast deal has gone away with the PPV model.

Cormier reveals Khabib Nurmagomedov still refuses to say McGregor’s name

McGregor’s rivalry with Khabib Nurmagomedov still gets talked about to this day, with it being the biggest rivalry in the sport’s history.

And because of the magnitude of it, Cormier has claimed that Khabib still refuses to say McGregor’s name whenever he comes up in conversation.

“Khabib won’t say Conor’s name still today. He still does not say his name. He hates him. They’re in the octagon and Conor whispers after the third round to Khabib, ‘It’s just business.’ Khabib goes, ‘No it ain’t.’ Khabib was holding him in that (rear naked choke) and said, ‘I kicked your ass.'”
