Canelo Alvarez’s 2017 opponent had his $3 million paycheck stolen hours after humiliating 12-round shutout

Things went from bad to worse for this Canelo Alvarez victim.

Alvarez has risen to legendary status through a record-setting 67-fight professional career in boxing, during which he’s enjoyed a number of dominant nights inside the ring. Not many, though, have been as one-sided as what transpired on May 6, 2017.

After winning the WBO light middleweight title with a knockout against Liam Smith, Alvarez’s final fight before a draw with Gennady Golovkin ended his winning run came against Julio Cesar Chavez Jr.

While Chavez Jr was a former WBC champion, he had long failed to live up to his father’s legacy and had frequently had his motivation and effort questioned by prominent names in the sport. It is safe to say that his performance against Alvarez did little to quash such criticism.

In the aftermath, however, it might not have been the result that Chavez Jr was most concerned about…

Julio Cesar Chavez Jr was allegedly robbed while partying after one-sided loss to Canelo Alvarez

Alvarez comfortably beat Chavez Jr, pitching a complete shutout across 12 rounds to earn three 120-108 scorecards at Las Vegas’ T-Mobile Arena.

The defeated Mexican caused a stir in the aftermath when videos hit social media that showed him partying with multiple people in a hotel room. Those individuals were later accused of drugging the boxing star before stealing his phone, watch, and $3 million paycheck.

Chavez Jr’s wife, Frida, made the claim while speaking to ESPN Deportes, stating that she and Julio had met a British man and his three female friends at an MGM Grand Garden Arena bar. When she left to be with their daughter, Chavez Jr continued partying with them at a hotel room. It is there that the theft was alleged to have taken place.

Spiked or not, Frida insisted that her husband had certainly been ‘the object of a trap’ that encouraged him to consume a considerable amount of alcohol.

Security at MGM Grand later confirmed that the $3 million check had been discovered on the premises, but police were still investigating the theft of a $40,000 Hublot watch.

Julio Cesar Chavez Jr replaced Canelo Alvarez after Jake Paul fight fell through

Things have gone much differently for the pair since their 2017 clash.

Alvarez has secured a number of accolades, which includes becoming the first and only undisputed super middleweight champion in history — a feat he achieved for a second time this past May when Alvarez defeated William Scull.

His fellow countryman, meanwhile, has remained inconsistent in the ring and delivered a number of disappointing performances. That includes Chavez Jr’s embarrassing loss to Anderson Silva, a UFC legend who was competing in the ring for the first time in 16 years.

But despite Alvarez and Chavez Jr’s different career paths, the pair did negotiate with the same man in 2025: YouTuber-turned-boxer Jake Paul.

After Alvarez signed with Turki Alalshikh’s Riyadh Season, collapsing the Paul bout and setting up the upcoming Terence Crawford showdown, ‘The Problem Child’ instead turned his attention to the Mexican’s ex-opponent.

Paul defeated Chavez Jr in their match this past June, marking the latest difficult night in the squared circle for the former WBC champ.
