Heavyweight boxing legend Mike Tyson warned Terence Crawford not to take the fight against Canelo Alvarez, months before their historic clash was booked.
On September 13, Canelo Alvarez and Terence Crawford will clash in one of the biggest boxing fights in recent memory, with the winner taking the undisputed super middleweight title.
The fight will headline TKO Boxing‘s inaugural event after it was announced that UFC boss Dana White will be the main promoter, with the backing of Turki Alalshikh.
Alalshikh recently made a big revelation that the event will take place over ‘a couple of days’, as they are keen to show off some of the upcoming prospects in the sport.
Although this is set to be a huge super fight, Crawford was warned against taking the fight months before he signed his name on the dotted line.
Mike Tyson urged Crawford not to fight Canelo Alvarez
At one point, it seemed almost guaranteed that Canelo would fight Jake Paul in a highly controversial fight, but in the final hour of negotiations, Alalshikh signed Canelo to an exclusive deal as he wanted to make the super fight against Crawford.
For the fight, Crawford will be moving up two weight classes to take on the Mexican champion, which has been deemed an extremely bad idea by former heavyweight king, Mike Tyson.
“Man, he can do what he wants but I don’t think that’s a good idea. I just don’t think it’s a good idea. What would he have, I don’t know, I don’t think it’s a good idea, people have done things crazy like that before, I just think he doesn’t have to do it,” Tyson told ES News over a year ago.
Tyson isn’t the only fighter to have warned Crawford about taking the fight against Canelo, with several former pros showing concern for the difference in weight between the two.
Despite the widespread concern, Crawford has actually been backed to beat Canelo by the only fighter to have shared the ring with them both, Amir Khan.
Dmitry Bivol gives Crawford some advice ahead of Canelo clash
Canelo has only been beaten twice throughout his storied career, and despite being beaten by Dmitry Bivol in 2022, he earned his biggest ever fight purse according to reports.
And ahead of the Mexican’s fight against ‘Bud’, Bivol has offered Crawford some words of technical advice which could help him become just the third fighter to beat the all-time great.
