Canelo Alvarez earned highest career purse despite suffering shock loss to pound-for-pound great in history-making fight

Throughout his career, Canelo Alvarez has fought several all-time greats and made a lot of money along the way.

On September 13, Canelo Alvarez will return to the boxing ring for the first time since earlier this year when he takes on Terence Crawford in one of the biggest fights in recent memory.

The event will be the inaugural event by Dana White and his new boxing promotion TKO Boxing, after he and Turki Alalshikh announced their historic partnership at the start of the year.

And anticipation is building high ahead of the undisputed super middleweight matchup, and earlier this year during the press conference, White had to step in to break up a near-brawl.

Both fighters will undoubtedly be earning a huge purse for the super fight, despite the result of the fight, which Canelo knows very well about.

Canelo Alvarez earned career high purse despite shock loss

Throughout his career, the Mexican champion has fought several big names in the sport, including Floyd Mayweather, who handed him his first ever loss.

And it was after his second professional loss that Canelo reportedly earned the biggest purse of his career, after he was handed a shock loss against Dmitry Bivol.

After going up to light heavyweight to take on one of the most feared champions at the time, the Mexican moved back down to middleweight to continue defending his titles.

Canelo went on to successfully defend the title four more times before once again returning to light heavyweight to take on the technical Bivol, who he was said to have avoided at one point.

The fight was historic in ways as it marked DAZN’s first PPV offering in the United States and Canada.

Early in the fight, both fighters had their moments of success, but Bivol seemed to be making more use of his moments, floating in and out of distance well, landing his big shots.

In the mid-rounds, Bivol continued stepping up the pace as Canelo seemed to tire, potentially because of the fact that Bivol was naturally a bigger fighter than him.

The fight ended up going to the scorecards where Bivol picked up the shock win, which was later protested by Canelo who claimed Bivol only won five rounds.

According to reports at the time, the fight surpassed 520,000 PPV buys worldwide, which was much lower than the 1 million that was forecasted. However, it generated a revenue between $35-40 million. Canelo received a $15 million base pay, which is reported to have risen to over $53 million, which would make it his career high purse.

Canelo and Bivol never had their rematch

Following the fight, Canelo made it clear that he was going to activate the rematch clause in his contract as he wasn’t happy with the result.

But despite that, he and Bivol never met in the ring again and both went on to continue their incredible careers, avoiding each other’s paths.
