Tatsuro Taira vs Hyun Sung Park UFC Vegas 108 result: Undefeated star loses his 0 after saving the day on late notice

Tatsuro Taira handed Hyun Sung Park his first defeat with a second round choke in the main event of yet another Apex event in UFC Vegas 108.

The event was due to be headlined by Taira against number four Amir Albazi, but a health issue cost the latter. Park stepped up with just days to go, taking his opportunity to land himself a spot deep in the rankings.

As with most events at the UFC’s facility, the atmosphere was flat throughout despite a string of impressive finishes and exciting moments. And there was a star-studded crowd in attendance, including the likes of Paddy Pimblett.

An awkard glove touch kicked off proceedings before the pair tapped gloves at the first bell. Tatsuro Taira quickly dropped Hyun Sung Park with a laser-accurate lead right hand within the opening minutes, but was unable to secure the finish immediately.

Taira had complete control of the positions throughout the rest of the first, taking the back and pushing for a submission. Park ultimately took the risk of jumping to his back to slam his rival to the deck, although it didn’t do much to stop the advancement of the position.

By the time they made it to round two, Park will have been thrilled for the break. That relief didn’t last long as Taira got him down and landed the rear naked choke submission within a minute of the round beginning.

UFC Vegas 108 main event was changed on days’ notice

As recently as last weekend, the main event of UFC Vegas 108 was supposed to be Taira against number four Amir Albazi. The bout was likely to have serious world title implications given how dominant Alexandre Pantoja has been as champion, but it was cut off due to a medical concern.

Albazi was keen to fight on despite doctors’ orders, but according to an Instagram post from the man of the hour, he was forced to pull out. “I finished my entire camp and did everything in my power to be ready, but unfortunately I wasn’t medically cleared in time,” Albazi wrote.

“The UFC and the commission made the call in the interest of my health and safety. I respect that decision – even if my heart was ready to step inside that cage and handle business. This isn’t the end. Just a small setback. I’ll be back stronger.

“Thank you from the bottom of my heart to my fans, my team, and everyone who stands with me through the highs and lows. The Prince will return soon.”
