Demetrious Johnson has shared his thoughts on Dustin Poirier following his retirement at UFC 318.
‘The Diamond’ fell to a unanimous decision defeat against Max Holloway, who defended his BMF title on Saturday night.
As planned, Dustin Poirier laid down his gloves and called it a career after having one last dance in front of a hometown crowd in New Orleans, Louisiana.
The fan favorite never became an undisputed UFC champion before retiring with 10 losses on his 40-fight record, but he still seems to be destined for the Hall of Fame.

Demetrious Johnson praises Dustin Poirier
Demetrious Johnson is widely regarded as one of the best fighters in MMA history after his legendary run in the sport.
‘Mighty Mouse’ insists Poirier has had a ‘very successful’ career despite never reaching the elite level.
The former UFC flyweight champion says the money made from his fan-friendly style is what makes Poirier stand out from others.
“A long, long, long, long career of ups and downs,” Johnson said about Poirier following UFC 318.
“Knockouts. Him knocking people out, him submitting people, him getting submitted.
“I mean, his career was kind of up and down, but very successful because he made a lot, a lot of money.
“Never became the undisputed champion, but interim champion, he was.
“When it came to the brawls, I think Dustin might have had one of the best brawls when he would fight.”
Dustin Poirier’s final post-fight UFC interview
Holloway graciously stepped aside to let Poirier enjoy his moment at the end of their trilogy bout.
The 36-year-old icon talked about retiring during his final post-fight interview with Daniel Cormier.
“It’s been overwhelming, honestly,” Poirier said about the entire fight week.
“I feel appreciated. I feel seen. I’ve never got to step outside of fighting and look at it this way. I’ve always been going through fighting and trying to grind to the next thing and provide for me and the family. I never got to look from third person.
“But this week has been incredible. I feel loved by the fans, Louisiana, and the company. It’s been incredible. I didn’t know I touched as many people as I did by chasing my dreams. I’m forever grateful. I love you all.”
