Dustin Poirier confirms rap legend will make the walk with him for UFC 318 retirement after pitching dream scenario

The UFC has pulled out all the stops to give Dustin Poirier the retirement fight that he deserves.

While Dana White may not grant Max Holloway the same special treatment, the promotion moved the schedule around in order to have UFC 318 take place in New Orleans.

Fighting in his home state against a fellow legend of the sport was one of the big goals that ‘The Diamond’ wanted to tick off for his last dance.

With the BMF title on the line, there has also been some conversation regarding who should wrap the belt around either Poirier or Holloway.

Months before his final fight week came around, Poirier also outlined plans for his dream walk out before he steps inside the Octagon for the final time.

Dustin Poirier confirms dream walk out plans with Lil Wayne accompanying him to the Octagon

During his media day interviews on UFC 318 fight week, Dustin Poirier confirmed that the dream scenario that he pitched for his final walk out is set to happen on Saturday night.

Anyone who has been watching ‘The Diamond’ for some time knows that his walk out song of choice is the iconic James Brown track, ‘The Boss’.

However, this wasn’t always the case as when he started his UFC career in 2011, Poirier would make his way to the Octagon to the sound of Lil Wayne’s ‘Drop the World’.

Poirier previously stated during an interview on The Ariel Helwani Show in April that if New Orleans native Lil Wayne wanted to walk him to the Octagon, he would go back to using the rapper’s track.

While he has since changed his mind slightly about this plan, ‘The Diamond’ told the media that he will in fact be accompanied by the rap legend at the Smoothie King Center on July 19.

“It’ll be a little bit of James Brown, little bit of Wayne. Yeah, Wayne’s walking out with me.”

When Poirier was asked about his decision to still feature James Brown in the walk out, he said that it simply had to be a part of the final walk.

“I mean, I have to and I paid the cost to be the boss. So, on my last one, I can’t switch it up, I can’t go that far away from it. I need to hear that. I need to feel that vibe before I fight somebody.”

Dustin Poirier was overcome with emotion while reading retirement letters

UFC 318 is sure to be an emotional moment for Dustin Poirier as he caps off what has been an incredible career.

Ahead of fight night, ‘The Diamond’ received several letters from several notable supporters in his life, which led to him fighting back his emotions.

Poirier read the letters aloud in an interview with ESPN MMA before stopping and asking to keep them for after July 19.

By the time ‘The Boss’ hits on Saturday night, you can expect to see Poirier in full war mode for one final time.
