Dustin Poirier’s greatest performances ranked ahead of emotional UFC 318 retirement fight

Throughout his incredible tenure in the UFC, Dustin Poirier has put on some terrific performances that will go down in the history of the sport.

This coming Saturday, Dustin Poirier will make his final walk to the Octagon when he takes on Max Holloway for the BMF title at UFC 318, in what will be his emotional retirement fight.

It will mark ‘The Diamond’s’ first fight in over a year with his last fight having come against Islam Makhachev last June at UFC 302.

With his undisputed title aspirations dead and buried, the UFC legend decided to call an end to his career with one last fight and it will complete a trilogy against ‘Blessed’ Holloway.

Having beaten some incredible names throughout his career, here are Poirier’s greatest performances ranked ahead of his last dance.

3. Dustin Poirier vs Conor McGregor – UFC 257

After announcing his return to the Octagon in 2021, Conor McGregor was matched up with ‘The Diamond’ in what was a rematch of their clash in 2014.

Heading into the fight, ‘The Notorious’ McGregor was uncharacteristically respectful of Poirier and the build up was different to a usual McGregor fight.

In the first round, Poirier began chopping at the leg of the Irishman and landed a few big counter shots on the chin of the former double champion.

Near the end of round one, McGregor landed a few big shots but they were answered back by Poirier who continued to land huge leg kicks.

And then in the second round, ‘The Diamond’ landed a huge sequence that subsequently left McGregor out cold on the canvas, handing the Irishman his first UFC loss by KO.

2. Dustin Poirier vs Dan Hooker – UFC Vegas 4

When Poirier and Dan Hooker met inside the UFC Apex Octagon during a tough time in the world, they put on one of the most incredible shows ever witnessed in the UFC.

To this day fans still claim the fight was arguably one of the greatest fights ever after the two went life and death for five rounds, leaving their hearts and souls inside the cage.

‘The Diamond’ went on to pick up the unanimous decision win, rebounding from his loss to Khabib Nurmagomedov a few months prior.

1. Dustin Poirier vs Max Holloway – UFC 236

Fittingly, Poirier’s most impressive victory came against Holloway when the two met for a second time at UFC 236.

When they first fought in 2012, it was Holloway’s debut fight and Poirier made relatively easy work of him when he almost ripped Holloway’s arm off with a first round submission win.

And after his dominant run as the featherweight champion, Holloway decided to test himself at lightweight, albeit on short notice.

Throughout the five round fight for the interim lightweight title, the Louisianan showcased his incredible boxing and completely nullified ‘Blessed’, putting on what is widely regarded as his greatest performance ever.
