Conor McGregor’s former rival calls his bluff on potential UFC White House return almost five years since last fight

Eddie Alvarez isn’t buying what former two-division UFC champion Conor McGregor is selling.

UFC superstar Conor McGregor remains in the headlines almost five full years since his last appearance in the Octagon. He hasn’t fought since injuring his leg against Dustin Poirier in their UFC 264 trilogy.

But McGregor raised eyebrows when he appeared receptive to the idea of potentially returning to the Octagon in the U.S. capital for an unprecedented UFC pay-per-view event.

Eddie Alvarez names an interesting opponent for Conor McGregor’s potential return

U.S. President Donald Trump announced the UFC’s plans to host a card at The White House in 2026 to add to the Independence Day celebrations. Next year will mark the 250th anniversary of the United States’ national independence.

UFC CEO Dana White confirmed the promotion’s plans during the UFC Nashville post-fight press conference, stating that he and his staff will meet with President Trump and other government officials soon to discuss logistics.

After President Trump’s announcement made the rounds, McGregor was among the first to throw his name in the hat to potentially fight on the card. Despite McGregor’s teases, his former UFC rival isn’t buying them, but teased two high-profile opponents for his possible return.

In a recent interview with The Schmo, Eddie Alvarez weighed in on McGregor’s latest return teases.

“Only Conor knows that. I don’t think so,” Alvarez said of McGregor.

“Dana and them have their own conversations, we’re not privy to them, we don’t know…I think if Conor does come back, I think Michael Chandler is the guy to do it against.

“Mike Perry says he’ll come down to 170 to fight Conor, that’s real interesting to me, I’d like to see that inside the Octagon as well. But there’s a ton of matchups for that guy, a ton of them.”

McGregor knocked out Alvarez at UFC 205 to become the promotion’s first simultaneous two-division champion.

McGregor and Bare Knuckle FC star Mike Perry shared a lively moment during a recent press conference, fueling speculation of a potential fight. Perry has become the face of bare-knuckle boxing since departing the UFC in 2021.

Shortly after McGregor and Perry’s BKFC press conference blowup, the two shared a humorous moment while on the casino floor in Florida. While the two stars share a competitive relationship, McGregor and Perry remain two of combat sports’ most lively personalities.

Perry is expected to face a top name for his BKFC return later this year. Darren Till and former UFC welterweight champion Robbie Lawler are two names in the mix to face Perry.

As McGregor continues to tease a return to the Octagon, many of his former rivals are increasingly doubtful he’ll follow it up with a comeback. But time will tell if McGregor’s UFC highlight reel is over.
