Netflix’s Ronda Rousey movie gets new director from ‘Euphoria’, former UFC champ reacts

UFC superstar Ronda Rousey is getting her own biopic.

The former UFC women’s bantamweight champion wasn’t just a pioneer for women’s MMA, she was a trailblazer, who competed in some of the biggest fights of all time.

Ronda Rousey came from a judo background in the Olympics and absolutely dominated in her crossover to MMA, finishing her first eleven opponents inside the first round with arm-bar submissions and strikes.

Of course, nothing lasts forever as the undefeated Rousey had one of the worst fall-offs in UFC history. On top of the UFC world, Rousey lost her title to Holly Holm via head kick knockout in 2015 and was TKO’ed in less than a minute in her comeback fight a year later against Amanda Nunes.

A decade removed from her title loss, Rousey has recapped the behind-the-scenes of her rise and fall in her memoirs My Fight/Your Fight and Our Fight.

Now, Rousey’s story will be told on Netflix.

Ronda Rousey biopic to be directed by Euphoria’s Augustine Frizzell

In association with Netflix and produced by Chernin Entertainment, Deadline confirmed Rousey’s upcoming biopic will be directed by Augustine Frizzell (Euphoria).

Based on the former UFC champion’s memoirs, Rousey wrote the script for the film in seven days.

According to Deadline, Frizzell read both of Rousey’s memoirs by the time she got the call to direct the biopic. And yes, she’s apparently a UFC fan.

Frizzell directed the pilot episode of the hit TV series Euphoria (2019). Frizzell has also directed films such as A24’s Never Goin’ Back (2018) and The Last Letter from Your Lover (2021).

Ronda Rousey reacts to her life story becoming a movie

A biopic on Rousey’s fighting career has been talked about since 2015 when Paramount had the rights.

10 years later, the untitled Rousey project has a director, a fabulous home at Netflix, one of the world’s largest streaming services, and a script written by Rousey.

Rousey commented on Frizzell being named the director of her biopic.

“Another step closer to making this dream a reality,” Rousey wrote on Instagram on Tuesday.
