UFC commentator pays tribute to ‘gracious and kind’ Jon Jones after MMA retirement

Congratulatory messages from prominent UFC figures continue to come in for Jon Jones.

Dana White announced Jones’ retirement during his press conference in Baku on Saturday, bringing an end to a career widely regarded as the greatest ever seen.

But the news hasn’t exactly marked the fondest of farewells for Jones, whose final act as UFC heavyweight champion was to avoid unifying the titles against his interim counterpart.

Jones dismissed the Tom Aspinall fight in the months following his victory over Stipe Miocic last November. That stance never wavered, despite Dana White guaranteeing Jones vs. Aspinall would happen.

While that’s left many criticizing Jones’ retirement, one UFC commentator has nothing but positive words for him.

Jon Anik praises retiring Jon Jones for his impact on MMA

Among those sharing their thoughts in the aftermath of Jones’ retirement announcement was Jon Anik.

The UFC’s lead play-by-play commentator has had a front-row seat to the major moments during the latter part of Jones’ Octagon career, and he reflected on the Rochester native’s greatness in a lengthy tribute on Instagram.

“Congratulations to the (GOAT), @jonnybones on accomplishing more as a mixed martial arts fighter than any man had prior!” Anik wrote.

“A lot of public figures feel perpetually misunderstood. Jones’ infectious smile and presence cloaked the absolute killer that resided within. Over 15 years, I have witnessed this man’s graciousness, kindness, and generosity with the UFC fan base.

“His success has helped push the UFC and MMA forward and, indirectly, he helped guys like me to make a living in the sport we all hold so dear,” Anik added.

“Appreciate all the time, energy, and love over the years. You will be missed.”

Jon Jones issues first statement on MMA retirement

Anik received some backlash in the comments due to his description of Jones, who has frequently been caught up in controversial matters away from the cage.

That includes during his ongoing retirement celebrations, as news of a criminal summons accusing Jones of leaving the scene of an accident broke just hours after White confirmed the now-former heavyweight champion’s decision.

That wasn’t addressed in Jones’ first statement on his retirement, which was posted on X.

The 37-year-old claimed that a lot of “reflection” went into his decision to hang up his gloves.

“Today, I’m officially announcing my retirement from the UFC,” Jones wrote.

“This decision comes after a lot of reflection, and I want to take a moment to express my deepest gratitude for the journey I’ve experienced over the years.”
