Julio Cesar Chavez Jr was suspended 3 times for 3 different doping violations throughout his career

Julio Cesar Chavez Jr has had issues with drug testing in the past, being suspended three times for issues surrounding banned substances.

The Mexican fighter is back in the spotlight after Jake Paul agreed to fight Julio Cesar Chavez Jr in his next boxing match.

He was the second choice after Paul’s fight with Canelo Alvarez fell through, but looks back to his best for the bout on June 28.

However, his recent return to public consciousness brings back memories of the three times Chavez Jr was suspended for doping violations throughout his career.

Julio Cesar Chavez Jr was suspended for 7 months for testing positive for Furosemide

Chavez Jr beat Troy Rowland via unanimous decision on the undercard of the Manny Pacquiao vs. Miguel Cotto fight, but the impressive victory did not stand for long.

The win was struck off and changed to a no-contest after the Mexican fighter failed a drug test. He popped for Furosemide, a banned diuretic.

Chavez Jr had struggled making weight for several bouts and allegedly used the drug to help him get down to the 160 lb limit for Middleweight fights.

As well as the fight result being changed, the Nevada commission awarded him a 7-month suspension, to go with a $10,000 fine.

Usually, that would be enough to deter anyone from testing positive for banned substances again. However…

In 2012, Julio Cesar Chavez Jr was fined $900,000 and suspended for marijuana use

Chavez Jr’s second suspension was much bigger than the first, and included an astronomically large fine for the former world champion to contend with.

Following Chavez Jr’s legendary final round fight with Sergio Martinez in September 2012, he once again tested positive on a drug test – this time for marijuana.

As marijuana wasn’t just banned, but also illegal, the boxer faced a hefty punishment for breaking the rules.

His fine was increased by nearly 9000%, as he was forced to pay a $900,000 fine, although that figure was later reduced to a more manageable fee.

However, the nine-month suspension he was slapped with was upheld, which greatly impacted Chavez Jr’s career.

After refusing a drug test, Nevada and Arizona indefinitely suspended Julio Cesar Chavez Jr from boxing

His third and, so far, final suspension didn’t come from failing a drugs test, but refusing to take one at all!

Two months before his planned fight with Daniel Jacobs in 2019, Chavez Jr neglected to take a drug test when visited by a representative of the Voluntary Anti-Doping Association at his home.

He told ESPN: “The anti-doping guy came here (to the gym) angry. He did not show any credentials as they are supposed to do.

“Any day I can do the test if they guarantee me it’s the same way as for Jacobs. I don’t understand because I have nothing official for the fight.”

The fighter was eventually reinstated after being handed an indefinite suspension by the commission, although he will have wished he hadn’t.

In one of his most embarrassing losses, Chavez Jr quit after five rounds of torment from Jacobs, walking out as fans almost rioted following a disappointing performance from the Mexican fighter.
