Conor McGregor told to ‘stop running’ from UFC comeback and long-awaited Nate Diaz trilogy

Conor McGregor has been told to ‘stop running’ and accept a third fight with Nate Diaz by former world champion Jake Shields.

Diaz and former Strikeforce middleweight champion Shields have been best friends for years, and were close-knit teammates during the build-up to both of his 2016 McGregor fights. Despite the pair going 1-1, the two UFC legends have been unable to make a trilogy happen for almost the past decade.

Now, Shields is calling upon McGregor to ‘stop being a b—-‘ and finally make the grudge fight happen for one final time. It’s been years since either man has been in the octagon, but it seems as though the Irishman is still far away from competition.

Jake Shields calls on Conor McGregor to rematch Nate Diaz

It’s been four years since Conor McGregor last fought in the UFC, and almost three since Nate Diaz won his last MMA fight. Since then, the latter has turned to boxing, while McGregor has been out of action with various injuries and contract disputes.

Speaking with Bloody Elbow in an exclusive chat at DBX 2 on Saturday night, Jake Shields explained that he feels it’s the perfect comeback for both men. “I want to see Nate and Conor fight again, but Conor is being a b—-,” Shields joked.

“Tell Conor to stop being a b—-. If you’re Irish, tell Conor to stop being a b—-, tell him step the f— up and fight Nate. Stop running. Everyone wants to see Conor and Nate bro, it’s like the super trilogy, the biggest trilogy of all time.

“Two f—ing superstars, it’s the fight everyone wants to see, make the f—ing fight UFC, stop being cheapskates and make the fight.”

Conor McGregor has teased retirement amid political ambitions

However, it appears that McGregor is no closer to a comeback than he has ever been. After pulling out of a fight with Michael Chandler last year, he has recently claimed that he is happy with his legacy in the sport and that he is more concerned with his run for President of Ireland.

“I’ve got two fights on the contract, I’m in negotiations,” he told the press at a BKFC event earlier this year. “Last week something happened to me, I went to the White House and my heart bleeds for my country right now.

“So there’s a lot of stuff going on back home, I’m happy with what I’ve done. There’s something else for me that’s in my gut right now and that’s kind of where I’m going.”
