Patchy Mix reflects on ‘tough night in the office’ following heavily criticized UFC 316 debut

Patchy Mix’s highly anticipated UFC debut didn’t go to plan in Newark, New Jersey on Saturday night.

Mix had been accused of labelling Mario Bautista a ‘journeyman’ before the former Bellator champion made his first walk to the Octagon.

Though a lot of people were very high on him heading into UFC 316, Mix’s performance was heavily criticized by the fans.

The 31-year-old had made some big claims about where he believes he would fit in to the bantamweight division which were supported by a UFC legend who ranked Mix over Sean O’Malley.

After suffering his second defeat, the first of which came in 2020, the new arrival reflected on his debut via a social media post.

Patchy Mix vows to come back stronger from disappointing UFC debut loss to Mario Bautista

Patchy Mix posted a brief message on Facebook shortly after his UFC 316 defeat to Mario Bautista.

Bautista got his hand raised via a unanimous decision with two of the three judges scoring each round for the #10-ranked contender.

Mix’s performance was scrutinized by the fans with his lack of movement and striking defense being a big talking point after the bantamweight bout.

The former Bellator star hasn’t fought since May of last year, where he recorded a contentious split decision win over Magomed Magomedov in Paris.

Unfortunately, his goal of hitting the ground running inside the Octagon wasn’t achieved, but Mix is confident that he will be back and better than before.

“Tough night for me in the office. But I appreciate the people that have supported and been along for the ride. Would have liked to do more and made adjustments. I will come back stronger from this moment.”

Dana White comments on Patchy Mix’s underwhelming UFC debut

While Mario Bautista was certainly overlooked ahead of UFC 316, a lot of people had high expectations for Patchy Mix for good reason.

He was on a great run in Bellator where he beat quality opposition in style but you wouldn’t have thought that based on his performance in Newark.

In his post-fight press conference, Dana White gave his thoughts on Mix’s loss, making reference to how difficult it can be for fighters who have success outside of the UFC to replicate that inside the Octagon.

“Yeah, I mean we’ve seen it happen before when you come from smaller shows and get to the UFC. Some people shine and some people have a rough time. It’s not easy.”

We certainly didn’t see the best of Mix on Saturday night but he’ll look to rectify that in the near future after taking some time off.
