A fighter set to compete on the UFC 316 card is responsible for one of the most brutal submissions in history.
Mixed martial arts’ leading promotion is back in New Jersey to stage the UFC 316 pay-per-view at Newark’s Prudential Center on Saturday.
Headlining the lineup is Merab Dvalishvili and Sean O’Malley’s title rematch, with another bantamweight championship bout in Julianna Pena vs. Kayla Harrison taking the co-main event spotlight.
Combined, those four names have plenty of memorable moments on their reels, but some of the most brutal highlights on the UFC 316 lineup come from the undercard fighters.
Among them is a woman who delivered arguably the most gruesome submission in UFC history.

Ariane Lipski da Silva left fans grimacing with brutal UFC kneebar
The UFC 316 early prelims are set to conclude with an intriguing women’s flyweight clash between Wang Cong and Ariane Lipski da Silva.
The latter announced her Octagon arrival with a truly vicious knockout in 2024. In the ‘Queen of Violence’, though, Wang will face a fighter who might just have topped that with a stellar piece of grappling five years ago.
Lipski da Silva, a former KSW champion, has had a mixed time of things in the UFC. But while her negative 6-7 promotional record might not be particularly impressive, the same can’t be said for her actions on the UFC’s ‘Fight Island’ in 2020.
Against her fellow countrywoman Luana Carolina, the Brazilian 31-year-old lived up to her nickname by pulling off an ultra-rare kneebar.
The frightening move left Carolina screaming in agony before she could even tap out.
It was later revealed by MMA Fighting’s Guilherme Cruz that Carolina heard “three pops” in her leg during the ligament-tearing submission move.
The defeated Brazilian thankfully avoided surgery and returned 10 months later, winning her next two outings.
Ariane Lipski da Silva’s submission was so brutal that many questioned if it was even legal
The best finish of Lipski da Silva’s UFC career drew widespread attention in the MMA community and beyond, but not everyone was quick to praise her.
Adding context to just how brutal the move she utilized was, some actually questioned whether it was even permitted.
With that, it was perhaps unsurprising to see some of the more squeamish users calling for it to be made illegal.
“That seems like it should be illegal.”
“My knee is suddenly hurting.”
“They should eliminate this type of brutality.”
“That move should be illegal.”
“Perfect kneebar. Here’s to everyone complaining about this being too violent.”
“This is a dirty move.”
“Is that legal?”
“Great way to end someone’s career?”
“Never seen a submission like that.”
And some unfamiliar with MMA took things a step further after the submission received mainstream attention…
“Ban this brutal sport!”
“This is a popular sport? Says a great deal (about) our country.”
Lipski da Silva has been unable to build on the moment from that result. She’s currently riding a two-fight losing skid, having most recently been submitted herself by Jasmine Jasudavicius.
The Brazilian also endured another setback in the lead-up to Saturday’s event, with Lipski da Silva missing weight for UFC 316 by a mammoth six pounds.
