Ian Machado Garry claims former UFC welterweight champion ‘should retire’ following recent disastrous loss

Ian Machado Garry has suggested that the former UFC welterweight champion should retire following his recent disastrous performance.

Ian Machado Garry recently picked up a big bounce back win against the soaring welterweight contender, Carlos Prates, putting himself back into title contention.

The Irishman then weighed in as a backup for the UFC 315 main event between Belal Muhammad and Jack Della Maddalena. Della Maddalena subsequently went on to dethrone Muhammad to become the new champion.

Following the fight, Machado Garry sparked a feud with Della Maddalena after the Australian made comments about him and his son on the lead up to his fight.

Machado Garry suggests Leon Edwards should retire following his recent loss

At one point, it seemed guaranteed that ‘The Future’ would end up clashing with Leon Edwards inside the cage after the two were involved in a brief feud after Edwards’ team kicked Machado Garry out of their gym.

The former UFC welterweight champion recently suffered a disastrous loss at UFC London against Sean Brady, getting utterly dominated for four rounds before tapping out to a guillotine choke.

Since his loss in March, ‘Rocky’ has been quiet on social media leaving fans wondering what his next move might be.

However, Machado Garry believes Edwards’ next move should be retirement from the sport, claiming that if he was the Brit, he would put the gloves down now.

“If I was Leon I would be retiring. He clearly doesn’t have the love for it anymore, clearly doesn’t have the talent for it against the best young youth in the division and yeah, just kick it in, say you were world champion and go off into the streets of Birmingham and tell the people of the story of what was, not what is,” Machado Garry told talkSPORT.

Islam Makhachev to challenge for the welterweight title next

Unfortunately for the 27-year-old, despite his recently impressive performance, he will need to wait for the culmination of Della Maddalena vs Islam Makhachev, with the former lightweight champion confirmed as the next challenger.

Ahead of a potential clash against the Russian, Machado Garry has admitted that he isn’t keen on the potential marketing of ‘Ireland vs Dagestan’, leaning on Conor McGregor‘s historically bitter feud against Khabib Nurmagomedov.

The Irishman is hopeful that Makhachev beats Della Maddalena to become the champion, and then he faces the current pound-for-pound number one in his first title defense.
