The young flyweight did well to go the distance, but she ultimately dropped to 8-1 as a professional MMA fighter courtesy of lopsided scorecards from the cageside judges.
13 months later, Barber suffered another decision defeat in her comeback fight against Alexa Grasso.
Since then, the 27-year-old has won six consecutive bouts to establish herself as a top contender.
In contrast, Roxanne Modafferi retired from MMA after a third straight loss in February 2022.
The pioneer of women’s mixed martial arts revealed all about her new life as a teacher in September 2023.
“I finally got a good job,” Modafferi told Zenger.
“I’m teaching English now as a second language and I’m good at that. My students like me, my boss likes me, and I feel like I’m making a difference in people’s lives still, which is still important.
“I’m doing that part-time in the morning. I am teaching kids Jiu Jitsu in the evening.
“My English students do not [know who I am]. I don’t think they are really MMA fans.
“One guy recognized me. I said I did Jiu-Jitsu, and he said, ‘Oh, I’m a Blue Belt.’
“But nobody really knows who I am at my English school.”
What’s next for Maycee Barber?
Maycee Barber will look to secure a 125lb title shot at UFC Vegas 107 on Saturday night.
Erin Blanchfield, who holds a 12-2 record, is looking to do the same after beating Rose Namjunas in her last fight.
It’s currently unclear who Valentina Shevchenko will defend her flyweight crown against next.
Whoever emerges victorious from the UFC Vegas 107 main event will almost certainly call out the champion, who is also considering potential fights with strawweight titleholder Zhang Weili and rising star Natalia Silva.
