Tom Aspinall keeps UFC fans guessing with ‘heavyweight news’ amid 500+ day wait for Jon Jones

Tom Aspinall says he has news ‘coming soon’.

The fate of the UFC heavyweight division has been up in the air ever since Jon Jones won the vacant title against Ciryl Gane in March 2023.

The heavyweight champion for 814 days and counting, Jones defended the belt once in that time against a 42-year-old Stipe Miocic in November at UFC 309.

To the criticism of many, Jones has yet to unify the title against Tom Aspinall, who was crowned the interim champion during Jones’ absence in Nov. 2023, nearly 600 days ago.

Aspinall’s done his part as the interim heavyweight champion, having defended the belt against Curtis Blaydes last summer by first-round TKO.

Following thousands of calls to strip Jones of the undisputed title, we may soon have some answers regarding the future of the heavyweight division.

Tom Aspinall says he’ll have ‘heavyweight news’ on May 28

On Monday, Aspinall posted a six-second promo with the date: “28.05.2025”

“Heavyweight news. Coming soon,” Aspinall wrote on Instagram.

May 28th is right around the corner on Wednesday with Aspinall expected to drop his announcement then.

Aspinall’s ‘heavyweight news’ could be anywhere between an official booking against Jones or a completely different fight against one of the division’s top contenders as some fans are speculating.

UFC fans predict Tom Aspinall’s next fight

Who will be Aspinall’s next opponent? UFC fans are split three different ways.

If Jones doesn’t fight Aspinall or is stripped of the heavyweight title, #2 contender and former interim titleholder Ciryl Gane could be next in line for Aspinall.

“Jones stripped, Aspinall vs Gane for the belt,” one fan said of Aspinall’s upcoming announcement.

“Aspinall vs volkov, gane robbed volkov in their fight, so it’s only fair,” another fan mentioned the #3-ranked Alexander Volkov, who lost a controversial split decision to Gane at UFC 310.

“Better be the jones fight!” a fan hoped.

“If this is just a sponsor just strip both guys,” another fan said of Aspinall’s announcement.
