Gilbert Burns vs Michael Morales UFC Vegas 106 result: New contender emerges after ruthless first-round KO

Michael Morales proved he is the real deal with a sensational KO win at UFC Vegas 106.

Former welterweight title challenger Gilbert Burns was billed as the toughest test of his young career.

‘Durinho’ was fighting to save his status as a top contender after being outpointed by Sean Brady, knocked out by Jack Della Maddalena, and dominated by Belal Muhammad during a three-fight skid.

In contrast, Michael Morales went into the biggest fight of his career with a perfect 17-0 MMA record.

Michael Morales obliterates Gilbert Burns

Morales pretty much dominated from the very first bell against Burns.

The 25-year-old stung his opponent early and often during their UFC Vegas 106 main event, which got underway earlier than expected because the Paul Craig vs Rodolfo Bellato co-headliner was called off due to a ‘medical issue’.

Burns momentarily threatened with a takedown, but he never really got himself into the fight.

Ultimately, Morales swarmed with punches to force an impressive first-round TKO finish.

The Ecuadorian is now 18-0 and on the cusp of becoming a massive UFC star after his latest win.

Burns didn’t retire in the Octagon, but the 38-year-old faces an uncertain future after UFC Vegas 106.

What’s next for Michael Morales?

Morales entered the toughest test of his career ranked at #12 in the UFC welterweight division.

A win over Burns will most likely see Morales take his #8 spot when the rankings update next week.

170lb champion Jack Della Maddalena is expected to defend his belt against Islam Makhachev next.

After that, Shavkat Rakhmonov appears to be the next in line for a shot at welterweight gold.

So, Morales will have to beat one of two more contenders to make his title credentials undeniable.
