Alexander Volkanovski questions the judges in Jose Aldo’s controversial UFC 315 retirement fight

Jose Aldo called it a day on his legendary career at UFC 315 on Saturday but his fight ended rather controversially.

At UFC 315 on Saturday, former UFC featherweight champion, Jose Aldo, took on Georges St-Pierre’s protege, Aiemann Zahabi.

Ahead of their scheduled bantamweight clash, Aldo caused quite the controversy when he notified the UFC that he couldn’t make 135lbs just hours before his weigh-in, resulting in the fight being changed to a featherweight fight.

Following his weight miss, Aldo announced that moving forward, he was going to go back up to 145lbs for the remainder of his career.

Despite that, after suffering a controversial defeat to the Canadian bantamweight, the Brazilian announced his shock retirement from the sport.

Alexander Volkanovski questions scorecards of Aldo’s retirement fight

Despite losing via decision, the scorecards were questioned by not only the fans but also by UFC legend, Rafael dos Anjos.

‘The King of Rio’ lost round three on all three of the judges’ scorecards, despite knocking Zahabi down twice in the round with a brutal knee and subsequent head kick.

And now, the scorecards have been questioned by UFC featherweight champion, Alexander Volkanovski, who believes Aldo was hard done by.

Volkanovski shared the cage with the Brazilian legend back in 2019 when he won a unanimous decision, one that was certainly more clear than this past Saturday’s.

“I wanna talk about the Aldo fight, obviously, reasonably fair, I get it but when you talk about damage, I know he ended up very tired on the bottom in that third round,” Volkanovski began to explain in a video on his YouTube channel.

“Aldo won round one but they gave the other two to his opponent. The second one, again, very close… I wanna talk about the third round. It was clear Aldo pretty much the whole way through that round.

“In the middle of it, he hurt his opponent and when we talk damage, it doesn’t get anymore damaging than that. He rocked him, dropped him, then dropped him (again) with a crazy kick, proper soccer kick to the head… His opponent dominated the last bit but is that enough when you’re losing most of the round and you got proper beat up, it was that close to being finished,” Volkanovski continued.

Jose Aldo retires as the greatest featherweight of all time

The 38-year-old’s retirement likely comes at the right time in his career having lost his last two fights and retiring before tarnishing his incredible legacy.

Although Volkanovski is still active and is showcasing that he has the potential of overtaking Aldo as the greatest 145lber of all time, Aldo’s legacy still stands, making the timing of his retirement perfect.
