Who is Gilbert Burns? Meet the Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu star looking to get back to winning ways

Gilbert Burns is one of the most respected and dangerous Welterweights in the business, but his recent record leaves a lot to be desired.

A loss to the two UFC 315 headliners has pushed Gilbert Burns down the UFC rankings and away from title contention.

With just three victories to his name since 2021, he needs to change something drastic before his career at the top level ends despite his impressive reputation.

How old is Gilbert Burns?

Gilbert Burns is 38 years old, having been born on July 20, 1986. He was born in Rio de Janiero in Brazil, where he first learned jiu-jitsu thanks to his father fixing a customer’s car in exchange for lessons.

Burns stands at 5 feet 10 inches, or 178cm tall. He fights in the Welterweight division in the UFC, which has a weight limit of 170lbs. For his fight with Sean Brady in September 2024, Burns weighed in at 171 lbs.

Burns is married to Bruna Bruns, a coach at the Academy Combat Club and a black belt in Brazilian jiu-jitsu in her own right.

The couple got married in August 2012 in her hometown of Niterói, Brazil. The pair have three children together, although little has been revealed about them.

Why is Gilbert Burns called ‘Durinho’?

Burns got the nickname ‘Durinho’ from his brother, who was called “Todo-Duro”. That roughly means “tough guy” in Portuguese, and adding the suffix “inho” indicates that Burns is the smaller of the two tough guys.

Reports estimate that Burns’ net worth currently stands at around $2 million, owing to his success during his UFC career.

He was said to have pocketed around $200,000 for his loss against Brady and around $405,000 by beating Neil Magny at UFC 283.

Gilbert Burns’ next fight

Burns’ next fight is at UFC Vegas 106, where he will fight Michael Morales in the main event of the event.

The Brazilian is coming off the back of three big losses which had him question his career in UFC. Losses to Belal Muhammad, Jack Della Maddalena and Brady has seen him drop down to 8th in the UFC rankings.

Morales is undefeated and could leapfrog Burns if he beats the Brazilian, which looks more likely as we get closer to fight night.

Despite breaking Della Maddalena’s forearm in the first round with a big kick, the Australian came back for an all-time great victory to heap misery on Burns at UFC 299.

He managed to roll out of a submission in the third round before laying in a huge jumping knee on the Brazilian, as the crowd roared with excitement.

The referee stepped in to end the fight, awarding Della Maddalena the knockout win over Burns to extend his winning streak to 17-0 in the UFC.
