Dustin Poirier finally locked in his infamous guillotine and left MMA journalist Mike Bohn unconscious for a brief moment.
The legendary lightweight, who is a former interim champion, is notorious for jumping guillotine in fights, but has famously never managed to succeed with the choke. He came within inches of ending Khabib Nurmagomedov’s legendary winning run, as well as using it on route to beating Dan Hooker.
However, his technique is known to be successful in the gym, which a brave reporter learned the hard way during a recent trip to American Top Team. The entire thing was caught on video, showing the moment he lost consciousness and his reaction after the fact.

Dustin Poirier chokes out MMA reporter Mike Bohn in training clip
While in Florida for UFC 314, MMA Junkie’s Mike Bohn headed up to Coconut Creek to interview the superstar slate of fighters at American Top Team. He interviewed the likes of Renato Moicano, Dakota Ditcheva and most notably Dustin Poirier.
His chat with Poirier made headlines across the MMA world and garnered over 312,000 views within just a week, but it wasn’t their only interaction in the gym. Bohn also got on the mats himself, determined to find out just how good the infamous guillotine is.
“I’ve jumped a thousand, missed a thousand,” Poirier joked as he discussed his efforts at scoring a guillotine finish which have to date been unsuccessful. He noted that Grant Dawson had originally showed him the move, which he eventually taught to Chris Duncan who has landed it twice.
Within seconds of entering full guard and extending on the choke, Bohn’s arm appeared to go limp and he went out. Poirier then jokingly told the camera: “Don’t be silly, jump the guilly, it works in practice, doesn’t work in fights!”
He detailed his experience in an article for MMAJunkie where he said: “All I felt was my vision closing in, then the feeling of a jolt, which turned out to be Mateusz Gamrot holding up my legs and shaking the blood circulation back into my brain as I regained consciousness.
Dustin Poirier is set to retire this summer
Poirier will only get one more chance to land the guillotine as after an iconic career that has lasted 16 years and 40 professional fights. He is expected to headline UFC 318 in July, with reports swirling around potential opponents including trilogies with Max Holloway and Justin Gaethje.

His 2019 win over Holloway saw him finally crowned UFC champion, albeit on an interim basis before Khabib Nurmagomedov returned to win their undisputed clash. He holds memorable victories over the likes of Gaethje, Eddie Alvarez and Conor McGregor, the latter of which cemented his superstar status.
Poirier has had three shots at undisputed UFC gold, but came up short each time. His most recent effort last summer in Newark saw him defeated in the fifth by Islam Makhachev, who now has the most world title defences in lightweight history.
