‘Best custom shorts by far’ … Alexander Volkanovski finally embraces nickname at UFC 314

Alexander ‘The Great’ Volkanovski finally got his own pair of custom UFC shorts and the fans are absolutely loving it.

There was a time in the UFC where fighters could wear whatever they wanted from jiu-jitsu Gis and shoes in the 1990’s to speedos in the 2000’s. That all changed when the UFC signed partnerships with Reebok and later Venum, the roster of fighters going to uniform.

Of course, there are some exceptions with several UFC stars rocking their own looks like Sean O’Malley in his bright pink shorts or Bryce Mitchell and his coveted Realtree camo shorts.

Venum’s custom shorts didn’t become all the rage until a month after Alexander Volkanovski was dethroned by Ilia Topuria at UFC 298.

Symbolism behind Alexander Volkanovski’s UFC shorts

Nicknamed ‘Alexander The Great’ after the legendary Macedonian king who conquered the Persian Empire (and much of the world), Volkanovski paid homage to his Macedonian roots with his custom shorts request.

Volkanovski’s shorts came in deep green and gold with the Greek meander pattern.

There’s two laurel leaves beneath the waistband, representing ancient symbols of honor and victory, which Volkanovski has had a lot of in his illustrious 16-fight UFC career.

Next to the laurel leaves, a round shield is shown with Volkanovski’s nickname reading ‘THE GREAT’ in Greek lettering. On the other side, the former champion’s name is in gold – fitting for his 10th consecutive title fight this weekend.

Born in New South Wales, Australia, Volkanovski also sported a Star Motif for his home country.

UFC fans rejoice at the sight of the ‘best shorts yet’

Alexander Volkanovski wasn’t always beloved in the UFC but he eventually won over the fans with his performances against Max Holloway and The Korean Zombie, still highly respected after losses to champions Islam Makhachev and Ilia Topuria.

“Those are the best custom shorts by far,” one fan wrote on X.

“Those are tough as hell,” another wrote.

“Looks a bit like Dricus’s [du Plessis] but it’s still fire,” one fan said.

“Volkanovski’s shorts fire, Lopes gonna get cooked,” another fan predicted.

“Daaaaaaamn that’s the best shorts yet,” a fan chimed in on X.

Custom shorts and a return to the Octagon, it’s been a long time coming for Volkanovski who hasn’t fought in well over a year.

We’ll see if Alexander ‘The Great’ can conquer the featherweight division once again with Ilia Topuria’s vacant title on the line against Diego Lopes at UFC 314.

Volkanovski’s first title reign lasted 1,521 days with five title defenses under his belt.
