Conor McGregor makes UFC retirement admission as he turns down fight offer amid political ambitions

Conor McGregor has admitted that he is ‘happy with what he has done’ as he eyes a new career in the face of his MMA retirement.

The legendary two-weight UFC champion hasn’t competed since a broken leg cost him his trilogy with Dustin Poirier in the summer of 2021. He was due back last summer against Michael Chandler, but pulled out due to a broken toe.

Now, he is keen to launch a bid for the Irish presidency, which would mean pushing towards a November election. And for the first time, he is beginning to speak about retirement with some degree of realism after many false flags over the years.

Conor McGregor ponders retirement ahead of Irish Presidential run

For the past four years, Conor McGregor has been making a major public push to boss Dana White to get him back in the octagon. He was cleared from the injury that cost him his last fight within a year, but spent the following two on the sidelines.

Now, with a run for the Irish presidency in the offing, he is admitting that his career may be moving towards being finished. Speaking at a BKFC media event today, he noted that he is satisfied with his current fighting legacy, and noted that ‘something else’ has drawn him in lately.

“I’ve got two fights on the contract, I’m in negotiations,” he told the press when asked about a potential move to the squared circle. “Last week something happened to me, I went to the White House and my heart bleeds for my country right now.

“So there’s a lot of stuff going on back home, I’m happy with what I’ve done. There’s something else for me that’s in my gut right now and that’s kind of where I’m going.”

The former lightweight and featherweight champion will turn 37 this July, and in the unlikely case that he ran for and won the Irish Presidency, would enter into a seven-year term. While he insists he wants to fight while in office, that’s highly unlikely and would rule him out for what would be an 11-year absence.

Conor McGregor reveals fight offer he turned down amid presidential run

In the part of McGregor’s answer which didn’t make it across many social media clips, he spoke about a potential fight in Alcatraz that was offered recently. He felt that the deal didn’t make sense, noting his massive pay-per-view drawing ability which is unrivalled in combat sport to this day.

It is well known that boxing supremo Turki Alalsheikh has been keen to stage an event at the infamous Californian island. However, it is unclear if that was the offer made to McGregor, or if other plans are in place.

“There was an opportunity or a deal, we’ll say, to fight in Alcatraz only recent,” McGregor continued. “There’s an event going on in Alcatraz in, I believe, June. They came to me and it wasn’t my worth.

“As a fighter we’ve got to know our worth. I hold every pay-per-view record in the book, I hold every gate record in the book and my comeback will be slated as the greatest or the biggest, most anticipated comeback of all time.

“So it has to be right. Right now, Ireland is in my thoughts and that’s where I am, but it will happen, I am sure and it’s always great to be here at BKFC.”
