Dana White-backed heavyweight loses American debut to 400+lb rival after freak injury

The eyes of the boxing world turned toward Madison Square Garden last night for an Irish-dominated event headlined by ‘King’ Callum Walsh.

Walsh scored a vicious first-round knockout in the main event of the evening, although that wasn’t the only headlined-grabbing stoppage that occurred out in New York City.

After being promised an American debut by Dana White in September, heavyweight prospect Thomas Carty suffered the first loss of his professional career after taking a knee against his rather sizable opponent.

Enormous favorite suffers shock upset to 400lb rival after freak injury

Heading into his American debut, Thomas ‘The Bomber’ Carty was a truly enormous favorite; with a whopping 98% of Tapology Community Picks going in favor of the Irishman – 93% of which predicted a flush knockout victory.

Yet with around one minute to go in the second round of his fight against Dajuan ‘The Punisher’ Calloway, who weighed in over 150lbs heavier than he did, Carty would unexpectedly drop to the canvas.

Carty grimaced in pain as he labored to his feet, limping into the corner before telling the referee that he was okay to continue.

“His knee buckled, oh he’s hurt badly,” noted the commentary team as the action resumed, albeit rather gingerly as it became obvious that Carty had blown out his knee.

10 seconds later, ‘The Bomber’ dropped to the canvas for a second time after trying to skirt away around the outside of his 400+lb opponent.

Carty went down for a third time just as the clappers sounded.

Between rounds, Carty’s team officially threw in the towel.

“They’re calling it, it’s going to be scored as a TKO victory for Dajuan Calloway… Not the way that Thomas Carty wanted to kick off [his American run] and not the way Calloway wanted to win this fight.”

Thomas Carty loses his undefeated record (10-1), while Calloway moves to 11-3.

Walsh vs Sutherland results: Three stoppages, one draw, three decisions

In the main event of the evening, Callum Walsh did what Callum Walsh was widely expected to do, i.e., walkthrough 19-1 Dean Sutherland with relative ease.

‘King’ needed just one round to score a sensational KO, unloading a vicious combination that dazed Sutherland before putting him away with a picture-perfect sweep uppercut.

Walsh and Calloway took home two of the three KO/TKO wins on the card; the third was scored by Feargal McCrory, who finished Keenan Carbajal in the eighth round.

Walsh’s next fight is expected to take place in Los Angeles in July.
