Conor McGregor baffles fans by taking over White House press briefing during St Patrick’s Day celebration

Conor McGregor was a surprise guest at the White House press briefing room this afternoon, even taking to the podium to give a Q&A of his own.

The former two-weight UFC world champion is in Washington DC to visit with President Donald Trump. Last week the President complimented his tattoos and fighting style while meeting with Irish Taoiseach (Prime Minister) Micheál Martin, and they are now meeting to celebrate St Patrick’s Day.

While McGregor may be seen as the latest in a string of athletes and celebrities to appear at the White House, he is viewing it as serious business. He has been strongly pushing towards a Presidential run of his own in his native Ireland, with elections expected this year.

As he prepares for his own run at the Irish presidency, Conor McGregor headed to Washington, DC for a meeting with United States President Donald Trump. He arrived at the White House where he met with press secretary Karoline Leavitt.

While arriving at the press briefing room in the famed American building, media immediately peppered the UFC star with questions. And in a surprising move, he actually opted to give answers and took over with his own mini briefing.

Ultimately, Leavitt had to step in and remind the media that this was an official visit. She noted that she will be giving further details of the meeting between McGregor and President Trump at a briefing of her own later.

Conor McGregor’s UFC comeback seems further away than ever

This visit left fans across social media baffled, and also likely sees his comeback to the octagon drift further and further away. The Irishman has been out of action since a stoppage loss to Dustin Poirier in their July 2021 trilogy bout, and last summer pulled out of a fight with Michael Chandler.

He has since become a key player in BKFC as a co-owner with David Feldman, and regularly promotes shows by teasing an eventual fight. However, he still has two UFC fights left on his contract, and if a run for President in Ireland were to be successful that could spell the end of his days fighting.

Writing on Instagram this morning before the meeting, McGregor highlighted the importance of his meeting with Trump, saying: “I land shortly in Washington for the most important meeting of my countries [sic] future. I am beyond ready. THE WORLD WILL HEAR IRELAND’S CALL!”
