Georges St-Pierre wasn’t impressed by an NHL player’s ‘superman punch’ technique during a viral brawl.
UFC Hall of Famer Georges St-Pierre threw his fair share of superman punches during his illustrious career in the cage. But never during a professional hockey game, as he saw one NHL player throw during Monday’s Utah Hockey Club vs. Toronto Maple Leafs matchup.
St-Pierre, a proud Canadian, is an avid hockey fan. He was recently seen at the USA vs. Canada ‘Four Nations’ faceoff in one of the biggest international hockey clashes in recent history.
As St-Pierre coaches up understudies alongside longtime coach Firas Zahabi, he remains an avid fan of the NHL, especially during the regular season’s home stretch. St-Pierre watched as one of the wildest fights of the 2024-2025 NHL season broke out during Utah vs. Toronto.

Georges St-Pierre reacts to superman punch thrown during NHL fight
After Utah fell behind 0-3 to Toronto early on, a fight broke out between Simon Benoit (Toronto) and Michael Kesselring (Utah) that sparked the crowd’s excitement. Benoit started the fight by throwing a superman punch before Kesselring eventually dragged Benoit down on the ice.
Utah went on to fight back, literally and figuratively, from a 0-3 deficit to tie the game at 3-3 in the second period. But Toronto got the last laugh by scoring the winning point in a shootout to win 4-3.
After the viral fight spread all over social media, it didn’t take long for St-Pierre to critique Benoit’s superman punch technique that nearly landed flush.
“Superman Punch in the NHL last night. He missed the target because he telegraphed too much, but the picture is awesome,” St-Pierre commented on X.
Georges St-Pierre walked away from combat sports return in 2023 due to injury
St-Pierre was scheduled to return to fighting via a submission grappling match with former UFC foe Nick Diaz in Dec. 2023 at a UFC Fight Pass Invitational. But St-Pierre withdrew due to injury, and as of this writing, it remains to be seen if St-Pierre will return to combat sports in 2025.
One of St-Pierre’s understudies, Aiemann Zahabi, will face UFC Hall of Famer Jose Aldo at UFC 315 in Montreal. It’s a massive fight for both bantamweights, and St-Pierre is expected to play a pivotal role in Zahabi’s preparations.
St-Pierre retired from MMA after defeating Michael Bisping at UFC 217 to win the middleweight championship. He was briefly linked to a comeback fight against Khabib Nurmagomedov in 2021, but the matchup never materialized.
As for Benoit and the Maple Leafs, St-Pierre might coach up the players for future fights after Benoit’s superman punch didn’t meet the UFC legend’s expectations.
