‘The Mac’ gave a teammate some props despite a previous clash of heads between them on social media.
If Ilia Topuria’s recent decision to vacate the featherweight title is anything to go by, it’s becoming harder to become a simultaneous two-division champion in the UFC in order to replicate the success of Conor McGregor.
McGregor may be more likely to fight in BKFC than the Octagon these days but no one can take away what he did at UFC 205 where he raised the featherweight and lightweight titles above his head.
‘The Notorious’ can usually be found giving his thoughts on the weekend’s big fights on social media and he’s never been afraid to hurt a few feelings.
When a training partner of McGregor’s achieved champ-champ status by winning a second world title, the original double champ congratulated him despite their complicated past.
Conor McGregor posts three-word statement to congratulate Will Fleury’s success in OKTAGON
Ireland’s Will Fleury had some work to do to rebuild his career following a disappointing ending to his PFL career which came via a positive drug test.
The 35-year-old signed to European promotion OKTAGON where he announced his arrival with back-to-back finishes before going on to win the light heavyweight title in December.
With the previous heavyweight champion parting ways with the promotion, the opportunity came around for Fleury to fight for the vacant belt at OKTAGON 68 on March 8.
Despite having to weather some storms, the 18-fight veteran got his hand raised at the end of five rounds to become a two-division champion in just 11 months.
Fleury has learned his craft on the same mats that Conor McGregor cut his teeth on at SBG Dublin under head coach John Kavanagh.
The two teammates had previously gone back and forth on social media regarding a political debate that was going on in Ireland in regards to immigration before Fleury had signed to OKTAGON.
In a post on X where McGregor referred to his teammate as an “outside hillbilly’s”, he also stated that Fleury’s tenure at SBG Dublin should come to an end following his PFL exit.
“What type of stock are you liking against me you f—— silly prick. Didn’t you get banned only recent for something? You shouldn’t even be allowed in the gym. F—— dope.”
Fleury, who has “outside hillbilly’s” in his X bio, has now received a tip of the hat from ‘The Mac’ who shared the following message on his Instagram story when reacting to the main event in Stuttgart, Germany.
“Fair f—— play!”
Will Fleury recently defended Paul Hughes amidst Conor McGregor criticism
Conor McGregor’s most recent feud with a fellow Irish fighter came about following Paul Hughes’ Bellator lightweight title fight against Usman Nurmagomedov.
Following a video of ‘Big News’ interacting with Usman’s cousin, Khabib Nurmagomedov, McGregor was extremely critical of Hughes and the way he represents Ireland.
Following the 27-year-old rising star’s classy response to the heated comments from ‘The Notorious’, Fleury defended Hughes following an incredible main event clash at the PFL’s Dubai debut in January.
“A fantastic representative of Irish MMA. Makes me proud to see you wearing the tricolour”
Things have gone quiet on this front ever since but it doesn’t seem likely that either man is going to brush this under the carpet anytime soon.
