Despite already having an MMA fight booked against a fellow UFC legend, the Cuban sensational will compete in an entirely different sport later this month.
Former middleweight title challenger Yoel Romero exited the UFC in 2020 and despite staring down his 48th birthday, the popular Cuban wrestler remains remarkably active in the combat sports scene.
In November 2024, Romero scored a brutal first-round knockout at the inaugural ‘Dirty Boxing Championship’ event out in Miami – his second fight in this exciting new promotion takes place later this month.

Yoel Romero headlines Dirty Boxing’s first YouTube event on March 22
Last night, Mike Perry’s Dirty Boxing Championship confirmed that their next event is scheduled for Saturday, March 22 at The Hangar at Regatta Harbour in Miami, Florida.
Yoel Romero serves as one-half of the main event of the evening, with the iconic Cuban set to take on former Bellator prospect Ras ‘Rasquatch The Jamaican Shamrock’ Hylton.
Whilst the first Dirty Boxing event was a ‘private showcase’ that frustratingly wasn’t available to stream anywhere in the world at the time, the promotion has also reportedly found a new home.
‘DBX 1’ – as it’s officially titled – headlined by Romero vs Hylton, will actually be available to stream live and free around the world on YouTube, Twitter (X), Facebook, TikTok, Rumble, and Kick.
The announcement of ‘the fight you can’t miss’ has certainly caught the attention of the wider combat sports community – especially as Yoel Romero already has an MMA fight booked for later this year.
Yoel Romero already booked to fight UFC legend in new promotion
There’s a new MMA promotion in town; the Global Fight League, which is primarily focused on giving various sporting legends one last chance to throwdown – including the ‘Soldier of God’.
Back in February, after it was revealed that Romero had signed to the GFL, it was confirmed on X that he’d return to the octagon to face fellow UFC legend Mauricio ‘Shogun’ Rua.
A date and location for Romero vs Rua have yet to be announced, although that hasn’t stopped MMA fans around the world from criticizing the GFL matchmaking.
“Seeing this actually made me physically ill,” stated hardcore MMA pundit Caposa on X in response to the fight news, with another fan noting that it “should be illegal” to put two fighters in there with a combined age of 90.
“Have some shame,” shared one user on X, with another fan writing “You guys should be put in jail for this lol… And who’s the matchmaker?!”
Romero and Shogun are far from the only former UFC stars to have signed to the GFL.
Also announced to the roster are the likes of Frank Mir, Junior Dos Santos, Alexander Gustafsson, Chris Weidman, Luke Rockhold, Holly Holm, Chad Mendes, Dillon Danis, Tyron Woodley, Kevin Lee, and Tony Ferguson.
The first GFL season is set to launch in April 2025.
